Speaker:You know, I like to help you with interview questions.
Speaker:This is one of my worst ones, but I feel it's necessary in
Speaker:case you haven't met Laura yet.
Speaker:So tell us a little bit about yourself.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:I like long walks on the beach.
Speaker:No.
Speaker:Okay, perfect.
Speaker:Perfect.
Speaker:Oh my God, I say that all the time.
Speaker:I really do like long walks in the beach.
Speaker:No.
Speaker:So I live in Connecticut.
Speaker:I work for Shure Incorporated.
Speaker:We make microphones, headphones.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:The Beta 58 is what we're talking into right now.
Speaker:We also make conferencing microphones.
Speaker:So something a little different you may not know us for.
Speaker:We've been around since 1925.
Speaker:That's crazy.
Speaker:So a good long time.
Speaker:And yeah, I've been in this crazy industry about 16 years.
Speaker:I started off as a singer songwriter in Nashville.
Speaker:And then I got asked to demonstrate a piece of gear at a trade show
Speaker:called NAMM and really fell in love with demonstrating.
Speaker:Turned out I was kind of good at it and they're like, Why don't you come
Speaker:work for us at this other company?
Speaker:I did for a long time.
Speaker:Got outta the industry for a minute.
Speaker:Came back two years later.
Speaker:Been with Shure for almost five years and I love my job.
Speaker:I do market development for Shure.
Speaker:Nice.
Speaker:That is very cool.
Speaker:Here, we thought that you were just like the Ecamm answer microphone
Speaker:and audio questions person.
Speaker:I am that as well.
Speaker:That's my other title.
Speaker:So, yesterday I was listening to your podcast.
Speaker:And first of all, guys, check out Song 43.
Speaker:I won't tell you what the 43 immediately came to my mind.
Speaker:Now.
Speaker:I'm never gonna be able to.
Speaker:Yeah, that was gonna be really easy for everyone to, but just remember Song 43.
Speaker:It is very epic, and I'll tell you why as we ask her questions.
Speaker:But I found out from listening to your episode where you were talking
Speaker:about how you fell in love with the Beatles, and we share the exact same
Speaker:reason for falling in love with the Beatles, but in a different medium.
Speaker:You went from the album first.
Speaker:I went from the movie first, which led me to the album, and then
Speaker:later the compact disc and then iPod and things of that nature.
Speaker:Fun fact, our other friend is also a diehard Beatles fan, Yellow
Speaker:Submarine Socks and everything.
Speaker:I just bought Yellow Submarine socks.
Speaker:I should have gotten you a pair as well.
Speaker:You should have.
Speaker:At the Cleveland Rock Roll.
Speaker:The Hall of Fame.
Speaker:Hall of Fame.
Speaker:And I was like, yeah, I was trying to be so good cuz everything was
Speaker:so pricey and I was like, I'm going to have to buy some socks.
Speaker:I couldn't help myself.
Speaker:Oh it was so incredible.
Speaker:So it's cool that we have a shared sort of musical thing cuz I think whenever
Speaker:you have your guest on your show, people having something that you have someone in
Speaker:common really does make the party better.
Speaker:That's true.
Speaker:I really love hearing that fact from you.
Speaker:And I like the whole way you do your podcast.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:It shows people they can just do it.
Speaker:So you were telling me this yesterday.
Speaker:How do you record when you're on the road?
Speaker:Oh, well, I bring my MV88+, which is a stereo condenser microphone,
Speaker:and it fits in very small spaces.
Speaker:So it's great for traveling.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:And you can change the polar pattern of it.
Speaker:So that's kind of the key.
Speaker:You can use an app on your phone or on your computer.
Speaker:And if you wanna change it to be cardioid, like this is a super
Speaker:cardioid, but like a nice tight polar pattern, you could do that.
Speaker:If you wanted to go stereo, pick up a lot more.
Speaker:Or if you wanna go mono bidirectional.
Speaker:Like if I wanted to do an interview with Doc while I'm here, which I
Speaker:might convince him to do, hopefully, I can put it on the table in between
Speaker:us and it captures both of us.
Speaker:So I usually bring that.
Speaker:But I've been bringing my MV7 on the road with me a lot.
Speaker:What do you use for a small interface on MV7?
Speaker:I don't.
Speaker:I just go usb.
Speaker:Oh, that's correct.
Speaker:Hello.
Speaker:It's not the MV7X, which is XLR only.
Speaker:That's what I got.
Speaker:I use the MV7 and I use the podcast kit, which comes with the
Speaker:Manfrotto tripod that has a special thick thread, like a mic thread.
Speaker:Nice.
Speaker:So I can just put that on the desktop.
Speaker:Cuz normally if I'm using the 88, I'm lying in my hotel room bed like
Speaker:slowly, you know, it's the end of the night cuz I'll be out on the road,
Speaker:you know, doing a trade show or doing an event and I'm just like, Oh God,
Speaker:I gotta get the podcast out tomorrow.
Speaker:And so I'm like, Hey, I'm joining you from my hotel room bed.
Speaker:So you can hear that a couple episodes.
Speaker:I do that.
Speaker:I like that.
Speaker:That's probably an overshare.
Speaker:Sorry everybody.
Speaker:No, no, it's really cool.
Speaker:Cause actually, I definitely have to pick one.
Speaker:My lucky numbers are eight and 22 and 88 counts, and so just, just single two.
Speaker:So I kind of like that idea.
Speaker:Here's what I totally forgot is about the fact that you can take
Speaker:the MV7 and use it as a USB mic.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:And I'm listening to the audio quality on your podcast, and I know
Speaker:you recorded a lot of it on the road and it sounds amazing, and I think a
Speaker:lot of people get caught in this, in this idea of what they gotta bring.
Speaker:In order for us to do a podcast on the road, I bring all of this, all the stuff.
Speaker:It really is all the stuff, but you have guests, and that's an
Speaker:important thing to point out.
Speaker:If you're gonna have guests and you're doing a remote podcast,
Speaker:then you do wanna use an interface.
Speaker:So the MV7X is a great option or an SM 58, a beta 58.
Speaker:You don't have to get fancy.
Speaker:These are great, because they're not heavy.
Speaker:These have been awesome.
Speaker:Because they don't have handling noise, guys, as I'm switching back and forth and
Speaker:a lot of you guys, this shape is common.
Speaker:This shape is so common.
Speaker:Icons of microphones.
Speaker:Anytime you see people putting microphones in ads or they just wanna show that it's
Speaker:a podcast, you'll often see this shape.
Speaker:This is the SM 58 shape.
Speaker:It's been around since 1950, right?
Speaker:No.
Speaker:I was just guessing.
Speaker:Oh, I'm lying.
Speaker:No, it's like 60.
Speaker:No, but good try.
Speaker:Good try.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Was it 66?
Speaker:Yeah, it's 66 for the 58.
Speaker:You know how I knew that?
Speaker:Because
Speaker:that's, Can I tell people this?
Speaker:Everybody knows
Speaker:because it's the year of your birth.

Speaker:So what's really cool is because of that.
Speaker:Like this is super light.
Speaker:The other thing is TSA doesn't freak out when they see it in the bag, cuz everyone
Speaker:who's seen it in church or high school or
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:You know, somewhere at some karaoke spot you've seen this microphone.
Speaker:It looks like a microphone.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:I carry some of my shotgun microphones for video and it always, tsa.
Speaker:We've been in your bag.
Speaker:We wanted to know what that long thing is.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Especially when it has like a right code handle on it.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:It looks right like a weapon, but it's just the microphone.
Speaker:I've had that happen before.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Always take your right code handle off.
Speaker:Jared probably knows this.
Speaker:Before you stick it in the bag.
Speaker:Never leave it on your mic cuz TSA will dump all your stuff just to check.
Speaker:That's a hot tip right there.
Speaker:Hot tip is very much, it's very important.
Speaker:They always go in my bag.
Speaker:One because I look like you know, a criminal and then the rest
Speaker:just because I have all this gear in my bag, they always open it.
Speaker:So that's a good.
Speaker:Yeah, I know that struggle, being a gear head.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Next question I wanted to ask.
Speaker:I like how you present your podcast in a very, like, we're having a
Speaker:conversation between you and I, even though there's a couple hundred other
Speaker:people having the same conversation.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It feels one to one.
Speaker:It feels one to one.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:How do you affect that?
Speaker:So I don't script, it's one of my weaknesses.
Speaker:I mean, I can read a prompter and it's fine, I can pull it off,
Speaker:but I just prefer to just riff.
Speaker:So when I'm on the road, I am recording into Garage Band.
Speaker:I am okay with admitting that because at home I have Logic and when I do all my
Speaker:music production, which the podcast is about, how I still make music and create
Speaker:when I'm on the road full time and I'm a mom and I, you know, just, I work.
Speaker:So it's like finding time to fit that in.
Speaker:So I produce my music on my iMac using Logic.
Speaker:When I'm on the road I'm using GarageBand.
Speaker:And as I go through, since I'm usually doing it the night before, cause I like
Speaker:to be fresh, it's a weekly podcast, so I try to recap the week before.
Speaker:I'll edit as I go.
Speaker:That's awesome.
Speaker:So I'll, like, if I flub, I'll just stop and hit record again and that's my marker.
Speaker:I mean, I could put a marker in, but I can't think that well when I'm trying
Speaker:to also freestyle and so, uh, yeah, so I just, I just go with whatever
Speaker:happened and I pick up from last week and usually include some sort of song
Speaker:example or I talk about a specific song I've been working on for a while
Speaker:and we dig into how it came to be.
Speaker:Super nice.
Speaker:Pro tip for the marker thing.
Speaker:Use a foot pedal.
Speaker:Oh, that's great.
Speaker:Any foot pedal that can replicate it.
Speaker:Like if you're recording it, I think Garage Band's the same as Ecamm.
Speaker:Hit M.
Speaker:So you assign the foot pedal to M.
Speaker:Any midi trigger.
Speaker:Doesn't have to be a foot pedal.
Speaker:It could be something you have in your hand.
Speaker:Any midi trigger that can replicate a m.
Speaker:That is fantastic.
Speaker:You know how we do.
Speaker:Good to know.
Speaker:That's actually a really good feedback though, especially for
Speaker:our audience listening, because I think we tend to bring out the
Speaker:perfectionism in the Ecamm Fam.
Speaker:So if you're sitting there, whether or not you, you want to do podcasting and
Speaker:starting in the kind of live video space like we're in, or you're recording it.
Speaker:Give yourself a break.
Speaker:Just hit that pause button, start over again, Or, you know, take a breath and
Speaker:keep going rather than overthinking it or feeling like it's gonna be, you
Speaker:know, hours and hours upon editing.
Speaker:Like it, you can, you can do that.
Speaker:Once you have those, those points that you know you're gonna cover.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Then you can really just go with it.
Speaker:But I waited four years to launch this podcast because of the
Speaker:aforementioned perfectionist thing.
Speaker:Going to all these podcasting shows and meeting all these creators and
Speaker:people, I was like, Mine sucks.
Speaker:And then I was like, You know what?
Speaker:Screw it.
Speaker:Screw it.
Speaker:I'm doing it.
Speaker:Yeah, exactly.
Speaker:Nice.
Speaker:So I did the first one and it was like, I don't know, seven
Speaker:minutes long and now they're only like 10 to 15 minutes each one.
Speaker:They're easy listening.
Speaker:Yeah , they're real quick cuz ain't nobody got time for that.
Speaker:So, uh, I did the first one, it was short and I was like, this is fun.
Speaker:And now it keeps me on track to do it every week.
Speaker:And I'm gonna start bringing guests in now.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:Different types of creators.
Speaker:An actor friend of mine, a cruise ship singer.
Speaker:Musicians, you know, producers.
Speaker:Just people I've met along the journey, so I'm excited about that.
Speaker:That's rad.
Speaker:I like a good shower cast.
Speaker:And they're normally ten to fifteen...
Speaker:I usually call them shower cast or makeup cast or do your hair.
Speaker:Yes, that's that's exactly what it is.
Speaker:Do your beard cast, do your, I was like, um, yeah, seven, seven to 15
Speaker:minutes are great things for that.
Speaker:I got a short break or the doctor's office, you know, Level podcast.
Speaker:And I do have them sectioned in my players like that.
Speaker:Like I know where my shorties are.
Speaker:So back, so in, in iTunes.
Speaker:Now that it's in podcast, it's a little bit harder.
Speaker:You could make a smart playlist.
Speaker:And if it's between this time and this time, just fill this
Speaker:playlist and so they're there.
Speaker:Super easy.
Speaker:It's automatic.
Speaker:It's kind of simple.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:So, Katie, let's have you ask the question.
Speaker:Well, I wanna talk a little bit, I know you just spoke about this with
Speaker:Strick and it's available on the replay, so it's absolutely available
Speaker:on the replay if you wanna dive deeper.
Speaker:But I know that lots and lots of people when they're just getting into podcasting,
Speaker:or maybe they've been at it for a little bit, are probably overthinking
Speaker:all of the gear and the technology.
Speaker:So if you're just starting out and you don't wanna spend an
Speaker:absolute fortune, what is the best microphone to start off with?
Speaker:Or what is the best microphone and maybe mixer system to start off with?
Speaker:Well, there's three questions I tell people to ask before
Speaker:they start their podcast.
Speaker:Hey, who are you going to be recording?
Speaker:Is it just you or you want guests?
Speaker:If it's just you, you can get a USB microphone plugged directly
Speaker:into your computer and be ready to go, or your phone even.
Speaker:There's nothing else that you need.
Speaker:MV7.
Speaker:MV7 all the way.
Speaker:If you have multiple guests, you need an interface.
Speaker:Not quite something as robust as this one here, but you know, a two channel
Speaker:interface if you wanna have two guests.
Speaker:And then you would need an XLR mic.
Speaker:MV7X happens to be a great option, SM7B if you're looking to just go
Speaker:all out, it's a great option there.
Speaker:So that's the first question.
Speaker:Then the second question is, where will you be recording your podcast?
Speaker:So are you, and actually that should probably be first if you're
Speaker:in a space that's reverberant.
Speaker:You definitely have to go with a dynamic microphone.

Speaker:picking up all your H V A C noise, that's because it's a condenser.

Speaker:So dynamic microphone, if you're in an imperfect space like we all are.
