Speaker:I've been on vacation, so I don't know what episode this is
Speaker:But we are here today and I am your Community Manager from Ecamm Live,
Speaker:Doc Rock, along with my awesomest, soup-making co-host Katie Fawkes.
Speaker:We're on episode 23, I think we're 23 today.
Speaker:The Jordan episode.
Speaker:I think it's 23.
Speaker:It might be 24.
Speaker:Cuz I was doing editing yesterday and we have been saying this for a while.
Speaker:I actually, I did, I put my mouth where my money is, my money, where my mouth is and
Speaker:I did a little screen grab of my Descript process where I say, you know, eight ga
Speaker:bajillion times and I highlighted it so that you see me in that zone, in that flow
Speaker:But so it's either 23 or 24.
Speaker:Here's a dope thing about Descript.
Speaker:You can actually copy those highlights.
Speaker:Just say copy, highlights, and paste them into a new composition.
Speaker:And that new composition would be like, you know, you know, you
Speaker:know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you can make
Speaker:like, you know, speed clip pan.
Speaker:That's our new theme song.
Speaker:That's just gonna be our new theme song at the beginning of the show.
Speaker:I say it a lot.
Speaker:Instead of like, that is my equivalent to like,
Speaker:you know, I wanna do a chop cut of, see I just did it.
Speaker:I would like to do a chop cut of you versus man Michelle, she
Speaker:is the, you know queen and I yell at her about it constantly.
Speaker:But she says it with such sass that it's like, you know, and you know
Speaker:girl, and I'm just like, Michelle, listen, if you say you know, one
Speaker:more time, I'll tell you what.
Speaker:So it's interesting you don't realize it.
Speaker:That's what I love about Descript is it does help you find when you, when you
Speaker:say that, she says eight jillion times.
Speaker:Eight jillion times.
Speaker:I said eight jillion times.
Speaker:But with the magic of Descript, I was able to highlight it and just be
Speaker:like, delete . Now I sound perfect.
Speaker:Alright, what are we talking about today, Katie?
Speaker:I'm gonna start speaking Japanese.
Speaker:Don't speak any Japanese cuz then I'll have to cut that out too.
Speaker:Descript doesn't speak to Japanese yet.
Speaker:We are talking all about interviewing and interview guests.
Speaker:So in case you missed it, last week, I think it was last week, we talked
Speaker:all about our podcast resolutions.
Speaker:Doc had all kinds of feelings about the words resolutions, but one of our plans
Speaker:for this year was to dive deeper into getting more guests and questions came up
Speaker:about what the workflows are for guests.
Speaker:So we are pulling back all of our documents and all of our resources that
Speaker:we've made over the last couple of years so that we can go through the guest
Speaker:process in the world of podcasting.
Speaker:So I did drop the links for the two documents that we're gonna
Speaker:be talking about today into the description so that you can follow
Speaker:along, but these are just templates that we'll be talking through today.
Speaker:So please feel free to snag 'em, make 'em your own, edit them, disagree
Speaker:with things, anything in between.
Speaker:It's so good.
Speaker:All right, let's dive in so that we can get us a nice, good
Speaker:recording for this podcast.
Speaker:I'm super excited about this because this is one of those things that
Speaker:everyone knows they need to do.
Speaker:I can never really think of a good analogy, but there's some out there,
Speaker:like everyone should have a like fire contingency plan for their house.
Speaker:Everyone knows this.
Speaker:We all learned it from the minute we got into kindergarten, maybe even preschool.
Speaker:We did it every year for 13 years, right?
Speaker:You get to college, you do it a couple times at work.
Speaker:You even do it.
Speaker:I don't know how many of my friends I can actually say, have a fire drill,
Speaker:fire safety plan for the house.
Speaker:Everyone knows they should do it, but how many people really do it?
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:Is that, oh, you got a new house, so you gotta, Hey, you know
Speaker:what I'm gonna tell the hubby?
Speaker:He would, he would , he would engineer like a special slide and like a
Speaker:little ladder to throw out the window.
Speaker:It's true.
Speaker:If we throw his ladder at a angle with this amount of pressure, we
Speaker:can get all four bodies on this.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You know, it's true.
Speaker:You're over-engineering, so to the bat pole outside your new
Speaker:Victorian house with a bat pole.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:This is one of those, right?
Speaker:Everyone should have this plan for what to do with their guests.
Speaker:I have to say, as you know, a person who have to often answer these
Speaker:questions, I get super frustrated every time I see people having
Speaker:this problem over and over again.
Speaker:Especially because if they would watch any of us, they will see
Speaker:that we hit these bricks too, and then we go through the list.
Speaker:And we go down it and we find it just like that.
Speaker:So if you, we did it last week on this very show.
Speaker:So if you have this contingency plan in place, you can, you know,
Speaker:Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy.
Speaker:And don't panic.
Speaker:Grab your towel and your interview guide checklist, and don't panic.
Speaker:Yeah, no, I think that's absolutely true.
Speaker:I think having a checklist is really important.
Speaker:And I go back to if you were with us for Leap into Podcasting, then
Speaker:you would hopefully remember Kirk did an amazing session.
Speaker:His session is actually all about failure, but in the beginning of his
Speaker:session, he talked about the fact that he spent, I think it was almost a year,
Speaker:if not more than a year, just being a guest on other people's podcasts.
Speaker:Before he relaunched his show and every single episode of different
Speaker:podcasts that he went on, he took notes on their guest process, what that
Speaker:experience was like for him as a guest.
Speaker:How easy or cumbersome was it, you know what, like what did he like
Speaker:or not like about their process?
Speaker:And he now has an incredible guest experience.
Speaker:If you sign on and do one of Kirk's shows, it's incredible.
Speaker:You know, every single step along the way.
Speaker:You know how long the show's gonna be when you join in.
Speaker:You know the questions in advance, you know, the whole flow of
Speaker:the show, what's expected of you, how to promote everything.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:And he's built this incredible process because he watched
Speaker:what other people were doing.
Speaker:He created this document, but he's constantly updating it and
Speaker:constantly making changes to it as he goes forward, even now.
Speaker:So I, yeah, I think it's, it should be a living document, and it should
Speaker:be something that you take the pieces that you like or don't like from
Speaker:other experiences and you build it out so that it's yours and it, like,
Speaker:it really reflects what you're trying to do, but also, you know, it's, it's
Speaker:effective and creates the experience that you want your guest to have.
Speaker:Correct.
Speaker:And if you're doing it that way and you are keeping it a live document,
Speaker:that means when something changes in your setup, you can update it when
Speaker:something changes on the front, right?
Speaker:You know, like, I don't know, maybe there's this company that makes it
Speaker:app you all know love that might be coming out with a new version.
Speaker:So, you wanna go and update that list.
Speaker:You wanna keep it, you know, keep it crispy and as long as you have
Speaker:everything put in a, in a way that you know what to do, you know
Speaker:how to troubleshoot it, it works.
Speaker:And this is gonna sound crazy people.
Speaker:This is gonna sound really crazy, but I want you to imagine this thought.
Speaker:Okay?
Speaker:So you just, you, your zone got called.
Speaker:Please do not get in line until your zone is called people.
Speaker:You guys get on my nerves.
Speaker:I'm always in the first zone, so I hate it when everybody's in my way.
Speaker:When your zone is called, you sit in your little seat, you got everything
Speaker:together, you buckle up and then right before they close the door,
Speaker:hey everybody, let's go to this video that we know you seen a thousand
Speaker:times, but pay attention to it anyway.
Speaker:And it makes me wonder how many people zone out when they play
Speaker:that video in the airplane.
Speaker:Everyone thinks they know what to do until something happens and then you
Speaker:don't know who you supposed to put the mask on first, yourself or the kids.
Speaker:How do I put this mask on?
Speaker:Where is the flotation device?
Speaker:Oh, so this is in the lines of like the airline safety briefing.
Speaker:I know you heard it and I know it's old, but you should go
Speaker:through it every single time.
Speaker:It should be able to be repeated.
Speaker:Like I can do the Hawaiian Airlines one verbatim, cuz I actually pay
Speaker:attention to it and I've jumped outta planes for a living before.
Speaker:So like, it's just one of those things, I know what it's like when people skip these
Speaker:things and I have had to unfortunately send them home to their mama in a bag
Speaker:and be like, hey, the Army appreciates their service because they would tune
Speaker:out on the safety briefings and you can never tune out on these things.
Speaker:And this is one of those things.
Speaker:This is your show and a lot of you people, when you have a problem you
Speaker:make like, we ruined your life because this is the most important stream ever.
Speaker:And I always wanna just throw it back at you and be like,
Speaker:well, did you do the checklist?
Speaker:Like, did you have your contingency plan set up?
Speaker:You know, and I don't mean to be mean about it, but if it's that important for
Speaker:you to complain to the whole internet that we ruined your life, how much of
Speaker:it did you take care of by yourself?
Speaker:And we wanna give you that opportunity.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think building it out is incredibly important.
Speaker:But let's, let's take one step back before we jump into the checklist,
Speaker:cuz there were a couple other things I wanted to touch on in this episode.
Speaker:First being whether or not you a wanna have guests.
Speaker:So thinking that process through on whether or not you wanna have a podcast
Speaker:that has guests on, and whether that's a regular process and if that is a decision
Speaker:that you wanna make, what are the best ways to go about finding guests initially?
Speaker:And bringing them onto your show.
Speaker:So we've talked a little bit about this in past episodes, but I wanna
Speaker:just call it out specifically in this episode on guests.
Speaker:The concept of, you know, as we just said, with what Kirk was doing, there's
Speaker:a, whether you wanna call it like pod swapping or just reaching out and
Speaker:getting to know others in the podcasting space in your topic or industry.
Speaker:But I think it's a really good experience if you want to be able to bring guests
Speaker:on to be a guest on other people's shows, which then makes it easier
Speaker:for you to do that reciprocal ask and start building up your guest list.
Speaker:But also it's gonna give you that experience on what
Speaker:it's like to be a guest.
Speaker:Cuz really with a checklist, what you're trying to do is eliminate the amount
Speaker:of questions that your guest has and eliminate the potential issues that your
Speaker:podcast may have that could be caused by a guest and save yourself a ton of time.
Speaker:So like the initial time you spend on the checklist is a quarter of what
Speaker:you would be spending if you didn't have a checklist and you had to answer
Speaker:all of those questions coming in from your guest on like, what time is it?
Speaker:Do I, when do I need to be there earlier?
Speaker:Where's the link that I need to click through and join?
Speaker:Is it an audio or a video podcast?
Speaker:All of those questions.
Speaker:If you're able to answer them in experience, like a checklist upfront,
Speaker:you don't have to be having this back and forth conversation with
Speaker:your guests constantly reassuring them or reminding them or letting
Speaker:them know bits of information.
Speaker:Everything is in one easy to find place.
Speaker:But let's talk a little bit first, Doc, about like where if you wanna
Speaker:get into adding guests to your show, or you wanna start a show that has
Speaker:a guest element to it, what are the best ways to be able to find guests or
Speaker:you know, what's the starter process?
Speaker:All right, so the first one, this is top secret, right?
Speaker:I'm actually teaching this in my course, but I'll tell you the top secret answer.
Speaker:You guys ready?
Speaker:Write this down.
Speaker:J u s t space a s k.
Speaker:Period.
Speaker:That's the one.
Speaker:Seriously.
Speaker:You'd be surprised if you asked the people that you want to be on your show.
Speaker:You'd be surprised at how many people say, yeah, and I told this story all the time
Speaker:because I didn't expect it to happen, but it was literally a swing at the fence.
Speaker:When I first got hired by Ecamm, Katie and I were talking about something in
Speaker:the chat one day and I was like, oh, you have to read this book that I've been on.
Speaker:And it's called How to Write Copy That Sells by Ray Edwards.
Speaker:It is an amazing copywriting book.
Speaker:Like I am so in love with this.
Speaker:And this was just after the time that Stephanie and Mike Allton, they had
Speaker:put out their Entrepreneur books.
Speaker:I was reading this book like at the same time, but yeah, pro tip read
Speaker:more than one book at the same time.
Speaker:Trust me, your brain collects it better.
Speaker:I don't know why.
Speaker:That's a whole conversation.
Speaker:Anyway, so I was like, this is so amazing.
Speaker:And then, as I was like starting to just get the vibe on this book.
Speaker:I happened to have wrote this email that I'm going to ask Ray to be on my
Speaker:show and I hadn't sent it yet because I was trying to make the copy sound...
Speaker:you were trying to copywrite it.
Speaker:I was trying to copy you more and then I got this ping this on my YouTube videos.
Speaker:Man, I'm loving your videos.
Speaker:Your videos are, I was like, oh my God.
Speaker:Oh my God, I'm ready.
Speaker:Watch my show.
Speaker:The minute that he pinged one of my videos, I was like, oh my God,
Speaker:thank you for leaving a thing.
Speaker:I can't believe you watched my shows.
Speaker:This is super incredible.
Speaker:I'm super excited and I have this thing sitting in my draft box to
Speaker:send you, to ask you to come on my show and just talk about copywriting.
Speaker:He was like, bet.
Speaker:And I was like, oh my God, I dunno what to do now.
Speaker:You know, like, so you'd be amazed if you just asked.
Speaker:I'm sitting there like waiting to talk to one of my heroes and
Speaker:when he showed up, are you ready?
Speaker:Like, are you really, really ready?
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:So that's the key.
Speaker:You gotta be ready.
Speaker:So yes, just ask.
Speaker:Now, where do you find these places to ask?
Speaker:I can tell you my, one of the greatest ones is LinkedIn.
Speaker:Like if you go on LinkedIn, there's people dying to get on your show, right?
Speaker:There's another secret that I teach in my course right here is, let's see,
Speaker:I'm trying to think of somebody in our circle who just dropped a book.
Speaker:Oh, Roberto.
Speaker:Roberto just dropped a book.
Speaker:Diana has one upcoming.
Speaker:Diana has a book coming up, right?
Speaker:You, as soon as you see them post that thing like, Hey, I
Speaker:got this new book coming up.
Speaker:This is when you reach out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They wanna be talking about that book.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:You hit them when the time is right.
Speaker:They got a new product, a new book, a new course, or something of that nature.
Speaker:You hit them up to get them on your show.
Speaker:There are entire applications like Pod Chaser that are
Speaker:designed to help you find guests.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:There are the people that get together.
Speaker:Eden will tell you, cruising the hallway at Social Media Marketing
Speaker:World, or you know, P O V or N A B, or any kind of conference you can get to.
Speaker:You will find the next 15 episodes in the hallway by doing nothing.
Speaker:You can hold up a sign looking for podcast guests, . You'll have a line that
Speaker:looked like Piggly Wiggly on Check Day.
Speaker:Just saying it's not that hard.
Speaker:Like I think people like, oh, I'm having a hard time finding guests from my show.
Speaker:I'm like, you're not looking that hard cuz people love to talk about themselves.
Speaker:Yeah, definitely.
Speaker:Yeah, I think the only other one that I wrote down, which I think we've, I've
Speaker:talked about I'm sure probably way too many times on different shows, but look
Speaker:into the communities, look, you know, look for who the moderators and who
Speaker:the admins and who the leaders are in various communities, whether that's on
Speaker:Facebook or LinkedIn or anywhere else in the topic that you're talking about.
Speaker:So, you know, if I was doing a woodworking podcast and show, I would go into
Speaker:those woodworking communities, find the people who like to manage communities
Speaker:because they A, are influential.
Speaker:They know their topic, they know their people, and b, because
Speaker:you've made them feel special.
Speaker:They likely are not asked to do that a ton because they are managing
Speaker:communities, which is less flashy than writing books or having a
Speaker:podcast or having whatever themselves.
Speaker:So they're more likely to be excited about it and let their whole community
Speaker:know that they're gonna be on your show.
Speaker:So they will bring a crowd more than someone who's doing this
Speaker:all the time and you're just one of many stops along the way.
Speaker:So it's a networking, it's a network.
Speaker:And I think that there is something about making, I hate to say like the
Speaker:little guys, cuz they're not, but I feel like that is an ignored audience
Speaker:as far as interview guests goes.
Speaker:And those are people who know what they're talking about and have
Speaker:a really high level of influence that are often forgotten about.
Speaker:So I think, you know, being part of those communities and really finding those
Speaker:amazing people, it makes a big difference.
Speaker:So wanted to call that one out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And here's a great one.
Speaker:Let me tell you the domino effect of this.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:So I had the pleasure of being on Jared Spink's show.
Speaker:And I got to Jared Spink from Tom Buck, right?
Speaker:So that's even another example.
Speaker:Like I was following Tom for a year before, he was like looking for a
Speaker:live stream software, but because I was always in his community, I was
Speaker:like, Hey, you should check out Ecamm.
Speaker:He was like, what is this Ecamm thing?
Speaker:And then Heather's like, I heard of that before, but I
Speaker:don't really know about blah.
Speaker:And then the next thing you know, they're like, oh my God, this Ecamm thing.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:. And then so from the Tom, I get to Jared and then hanging out with Jared, you know,
Speaker:during Social Media Marketing World, Jared introduced me to Sydney Dionk, right?
Speaker:Sydney is like a Sony Creator for the Sony camera verse.
Speaker:Like he is really awesome cat, right?
Speaker:Sydney was the vid and editor for Jenna.
Speaker:Jenna Azera has a older sister that goes by the name of
Speaker:iJustine, who is a big deal.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Now that Sydney and I are friends, like the chances of me trying to
Speaker:get to iJustine would be forever.
Speaker:But because Sydnee and I are friends, Sydnee would
Speaker:definitely vouch for me to Jenna.
Speaker:And Jenna is blood related to, you know, like iJustine.
Speaker:So the loops came close faster than you think.
Speaker:You know what I mean?
Speaker:And like, I can't tell you the amount of people that are, I consider my friends
Speaker:that I know because of Stephanie.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:So a lot of times when you are talking to folks and you're
Speaker:building these networks, you never really, you never just really know.
Speaker:You never know who your people know.
Speaker:For sure.
Speaker:And platforms like LinkedIn make it slightly easier to be able to see
Speaker:who's in someone else's network, but, and and actually even beyond that.
Speaker:you know, because platforms like LinkedIn are so built on this concept of thought
Speaker:leadership and, kind of, contributing to these larger conversations around topics.
Speaker:It's really important if you're trying to build authority in your topic on your
Speaker:podcast to find those guests who are the ones who are leaving insightful,
Speaker:helpful comments on larger businesses or organizations, LinkedIn posts like
Speaker:the, the people who are wanting to contribute to those conversations or
Speaker:who are saying are really, you know, impactful and interesting things.
Speaker:Those are the people that you want as guests as well on your podcast.
Speaker:So yeah, again, kind of keeping an eye on those, not just who are the people within
Speaker:your network, but who are the people who are wanting to talk about your topic
Speaker:and who are going out of their way to be helpful and be impactful in that space
Speaker:is, is really good to keep an eye on.
Speaker:Here's one that I think often gets overlooked, but we did a
whole episode on it:guest swaps.
whole episode on it:Yeah, exactly.
whole episode on it:I wrote that one down.
whole episode on it:I wrote that down.
whole episode on it:Yeah, definitely do the, go back and check out the pod swap episode with Jared and
whole episode on it:I, but guest swaps is really, really good.
whole episode on it:I know that you're gonna be on the Jeff Sieh Show coming up soon.
whole episode on it:Social Media News Live on Friday.
whole episode on it:You know what was crazy when I announced the course, Jeff saw the social media
whole episode on it:post and said, Hey, why don't you come on the show and talk about your course?
whole episode on it:So you'd be amazed at the way people are paying attention.
whole episode on it:Like, I don't know if I would do the thirst trap thing and be
whole episode on it:like, Hey, looking for podcast guests on my social media things.
whole episode on it:And if you could do that, go ahead.
whole episode on it:I don't know, maybe just I'm, that seems a little needy.
whole episode on it:I think there's better ways to do it.
whole episode on it:You could throw the question of like, Hey guys, what type of guests
whole episode on it:would you like to see on my show?
whole episode on it:And then your audience will go in and start filling in.
whole episode on it:And people who are paying attention will be like, Hey, I can handle that.
whole episode on it:And I guess the last thing I would like to bring to the table is, Do
whole episode on it:yourself a favor whenever you are going to be a guest on the show.
whole episode on it:Right?
whole episode on it:So Katie, you're gonna be on a guest on Jeff's show on Friday.
whole episode on it:Yep.
whole episode on it:Have at the back of your head, two more guests that Jeff should talk to
whole episode on it:that will kind of like work in a space.
whole episode on it:So you can be like, Jeff, listen man, if you're, people are starting to
whole episode on it:talk about, you know, things that are popping off in the ed tech category,
whole episode on it:man, you gotta talk to my homegirl Jill.
whole episode on it:Like, she's really, really amazing and
whole episode on it:darn Doc you stole my idea.
whole episode on it:I don't know if you guys have covered this, but, you know, iPhones make really
whole episode on it:great cameras and Eden works for Camo so she could come on and talk you through it.
whole episode on it:And she's so cool.
whole episode on it:Like she won't be a Camo commercial.
whole episode on it:She'll tell you like all the other apps too.
whole episode on it:But this is just one that she works for.
whole episode on it:She's super cool.
whole episode on it:You should like hit her up because Jeff did that for us in Dallas.
whole episode on it:He's like, let me introduce you to Erik and let me introduce you to Lou
whole episode on it:Mongello and like some of the other, you know, cats in his circle, right?
whole episode on it:So, and they will always invite you back because you're helping.
whole episode on it:You're helping them.
whole episode on it:So like I put Jeff on to Keely and then she was on the show and then yesterday
whole episode on it:he was like, oh, after talking to Keely, I gotta get me a Discord server.
whole episode on it:And I was like, got him.
whole episode on it:Yeah, I think that would be my number one advice as we dive into guests.
whole episode on it:So if you're sitting there watching or listening and you're thinking to yourself,
whole episode on it:okay, I've been wanting to add guests to my show, or I've done a couple of
whole episode on it:guests, but I'm not quite there yet on my process, make it a New Year's resolution.
whole episode on it:Make it a plan for this year.
whole episode on it:Write it down and do it.
whole episode on it:Be a guest on at least three different shows first.
whole episode on it:So before you book those guests, get on some other shows, see how
whole episode on it:that experience goes for you.
whole episode on it:Build those relationships and networks.
whole episode on it:You know, figure out what you liked about that experience and
whole episode on it:didn't like about that experience.
whole episode on it:And what were your favorite parts?
whole episode on it:Really have that whole vibe before you make updates to your checklist or build
whole episode on it:out a checklist in the first place.
whole episode on it:So, yeah.
whole episode on it:So on that note, let's dive into our checklist.
whole episode on it:So if you're following along, Luis, can you show the QR code?
whole episode on it:So scan this QR code if you're watching on video.
whole episode on it:If you are listening later, you can grab this link from the show note
whole episode on it:so you can follow along with us.
whole episode on it:But we're gonna be talking through this specific guest checklist that we actually
whole episode on it:created for a show that we did with Stephanie Liu last year called Showrunner.
whole episode on it:If you haven't checked out Showrunner, it's a great show for learning how to
whole episode on it:be a showrunner, a video producer in the live streaming and podcasting and live
whole episode on it:events space and live selling as well.
whole episode on it:But this is the guest checklist that we created.
whole episode on it:It's really applicable to literally any kind of show, whether it's a podcast or
whole episode on it:a live stream or anything in between.
whole episode on it:But yeah, Doc, let's jump through.
whole episode on it:So looking here at the first page, so again, it's like really nicely branded.
whole episode on it:You don't need to start with that, but having the name of your show or
whole episode on it:your logo or your brand colors really obvious is just a really great reminder
whole episode on it:to guests what show they're on.
whole episode on it:It sounds silly, but you may have lots of guests who do multiple interviews
whole episode on it:or have really busy calendars and like having that experience and having that
whole episode on it:front and center is really important.
whole episode on it:And actually looking at this, What I might change later, cause we'll build out
whole episode on it:our own kind of Flow guest checklist is having the link or a QR code back to the
whole episode on it:website or back to where people can watch the show would be really important to
whole episode on it:have somewhere on this first page as well.
whole episode on it:Which we don't have on this one, but certainly could add.
whole episode on it:Right, right.
whole episode on it:You would never put to join, you put to join like right here because
whole episode on it:they're gonna come looking for this.
whole episode on it:Trust me.
whole episode on it:It happens.
whole episode on it:I do it all the time.
whole episode on it:Like, what was the join link again?
whole episode on it:You're like, don't need this advice.
whole episode on it:Where's the join link?
whole episode on it:Where's the join link?
whole episode on it:Yeah, no, that's a really good point.
whole episode on it:Have the like call in link or the join this broadcast link front and center.
whole episode on it:Always have that too in the, you know, in the meeting invite or however
whole episode on it:you are sending that information over to your guest as well.
whole episode on it:But, and then this first page just has really, like basic, like really
whole episode on it:should be obvious information.
whole episode on it:But put it in anyway.
whole episode on it:Put it in anyway because it may not be obvious or may not be
whole episode on it:something that people think about.
whole episode on it:I now am like streaming probably a couple of times per week if I include this show.
whole episode on it:And even today I sat down and turned everything on and I was working away.
whole episode on it:And then I was about to jump on this call, I noticed that it was black and I was
whole episode on it:like, Ugh what did I do to this camera?
whole episode on it:This camera's not working.
whole episode on it:Like something happened.
whole episode on it:And I literally went around and it was turned off.
whole episode on it:It was in off mode, everyone.
whole episode on it:So I just needed to turn into on mode and then it worked.
whole episode on it:So it can be easily forgotten.
whole episode on it:So if you're like having some of that stuff down, even though it seems really
whole episode on it:obvious is helpful for guests to be able to have something to double check
whole episode on it:so that they don't feel stupid asking you questions that they might wanna
whole episode on it:know anyway or should know anyway.
whole episode on it:So give it, just give it to them upfront, even if it's obvious.
whole episode on it:We have make sure your computer is plugged in, which may seem really dumb, but
whole episode on it:that one cracks me up.
whole episode on it:But it happens all the time.
whole episode on it:People come on not plugged in, and it dies in the middle and it's like,
whole episode on it:yeah, it's more important for the laptops, right?
whole episode on it:Or like, yeah, if they're calling in on, you know, I don't know, an iPad
whole episode on it:or whatever, like if it's something that could run out of battery halfway
whole episode on it:through the show, it's a good reminder.
whole episode on it:Like if your cable is downstairs or like in a bag somewhere,
whole episode on it:that's not gonna be easy to grab.
whole episode on it:So, yeah,
whole episode on it:it's super funny.
whole episode on it:It's so funny.
whole episode on it:And then I like the thing about, you know, testing all your gear, your camera, your
whole episode on it:lights, your microphones, and I can't remember what I was watching the other
whole episode on it:day, but I thought it was hilarious.
whole episode on it:Somebody was hosting a show and it's of a pretty high level piece of
whole episode on it:software or whatever, and then the audience member said, Hey, can we
whole episode on it:get the host like a real microphone?
whole episode on it:And it's cause the host was still doing this show with the hello.
whole episode on it:Thank you for calling Dell headset.
whole episode on it:I'm like, how are you still using the Dell headset in 2022?
whole episode on it:I mean, like, it's inexcusable almost, but hey, there are people
whole episode on it:out there that do it every day.
whole episode on it:It's like, don't do that, don't do that.
whole episode on it:Well, and it, and this is also like, again, if you are having one checklist
whole episode on it:for all different kinds of guests, it's also really important to remember that
whole episode on it:like in our space, you know, most of the guests that we're bringing on are
whole episode on it:really comfortable on camera and have their own studios and are, but you
whole episode on it:might be bringing on guests who you know, are not, like they, maybe they,
whole episode on it:you know, maybe what they're doing is not really tech heavy and they don't
whole episode on it:have a lot of this kind of stuff.
whole episode on it:So, Giving them some reminders on how to get it set up or how to
whole episode on it:look their best is super important.
whole episode on it:They might be using their phone as a camera, but you know, they
whole episode on it:might not have a microphone.
whole episode on it:So giving them some of that advice upfront or making them feel really comfortable
whole episode on it:is going to improve the experience on your show, but also just gonna improve
whole episode on it:your relationship with your guests.
whole episode on it:Yes.
whole episode on it:If I was gonna talk to, say one of my higher end CEOs from say one of
whole episode on it:the companies here in the islands, and I know that they're not gonna
whole episode on it:have this type of stuff set up.
whole episode on it:I would send Brady or one of my other friends to their office
whole episode on it:to just bring them a setup.
whole episode on it:Right?
whole episode on it:Or if they're close enough to you, I would take my Mac mini set and set it up
whole episode on it:for them and like, look, when you do your interview, this is what you're gonna do.
whole episode on it:You should also build one of these interview rooms in your office.
whole episode on it:I know you guys got space for it, because I won't be the other person
whole episode on it:to have you come on when you guys show up on the news, talking about
whole episode on it:the project or whatever, and you're using that screen where the person's
whole episode on it:head keeps disappearing and stuff.
whole episode on it:It just really ruins your brand.
whole episode on it:And I know you spend millions of dollars on branding, like,
whole episode on it:why would you not do this?
whole episode on it:So in a way you can help.
whole episode on it:Back in the day, Leo used to send people a headset and a microphone and we're
whole episode on it:talking like $40 worth of equipment.
whole episode on it:But at the level of show that everyone professes how important this
whole episode on it:show was, like, how would you not send somebody a $15 pair of IEMs?
whole episode on it:Hey, you gonna be on my show next week?
whole episode on it:You got headphones?
whole episode on it:Oh, no.
whole episode on it:All right, cool.
whole episode on it:I'm gonna send you some IEMs just as a gift for being on my show.
whole episode on it:You know what I'm saying?
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:And that's probably more impactful too.
whole episode on it:I know, you know, I know many, I've done this as well in the past, but many of
whole episode on it:us have this process where at the end of the guest experience as a thank you, you
whole episode on it:send like, you know, a t-shirt or a vinyl sticker or like something that is branded,
whole episode on it:that's like, thanks for being on the show.
whole episode on it:I would actually say that sending something to them in advance that
whole episode on it:helps them look and sound their best on the show is going to be more
whole episode on it:impactful than the t-shirt on the end.
whole episode on it:So if you have to choose between like where your spend is, like purple branded
whole episode on it:IEMs, or like, you know, whatever it is, I would, I would invest on that
whole episode on it:on the front end because that they're going to, they're, they'll continue
whole episode on it:to use because it made them feel good and look good and sound like.
whole episode on it:So it, it's those kinds of things that I think are super important.
whole episode on it:So I just think through those decisions and again, have them
whole episode on it:really clearly outlined here.
whole episode on it:So if you are, for example, this document doesn't have it, but if you
whole episode on it:decide that you're like, oh, okay, I'm gonna order, I don't know, whatever
whole episode on it:a hundred headphones that I'm gonna send out to guests who don't have it,
whole episode on it:or I'm just gonna send it to every guest that I bring on that I branded.
whole episode on it:I would add that in to say like, you know, hey, on page one, like, did you
whole episode on it:get your, you know, make sure that you grab your Showrunner special headphones.
whole episode on it:You know, make sure that those are in a place on your desk
whole episode on it:so that you're ready to go.
whole episode on it:Like, have that line as reminders in because people may be coming from one
whole episode on it:meeting or one call into your call.
whole episode on it:Like you really just wanna make sure that you give those reminders upfront.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:And then the last thing here on this list that's hugely important that we talk about
whole episode on it:all the time and is like a sponsor on this show is like really the one thing that
whole episode on it:is the biggest pain point for guests and continues and will always be a big pain
whole episode on it:point for guests, is that they are gonna show up on their wifi from like a cafe or
whole episode on it:they're gonna be like at a friend's house.
whole episode on it:You cannot stress us enough to actually have them check their internet connection
whole episode on it:if they can't make any changes.
whole episode on it:Or the interview is like they're doing it like, and it's not important enough
whole episode on it:for them to upgrade or get to a space.
whole episode on it:Like have them go to speed test.net.
whole episode on it:Have them run a speed test.
whole episode on it:Explain to them what upload speed you are looking for, really spend a bit
whole episode on it:of time outlining that at the get go and then following up with them about
whole episode on it:that because there are changes that you can have them make that's gonna
whole episode on it:make that experience better for you, them, and all of your listeners and
whole episode on it:viewers that you could change upfront.
whole episode on it:And people just don't think it through at all if they're not used to this world.
whole episode on it:They don't think about it.
whole episode on it:They're like, I have wifi or like, I, they just don't realize that
whole episode on it:how much it impacts quality, so,
whole episode on it:oh, it's a hundred percent right.
whole episode on it:You know, like for us, we know that we are gonna want to do some stuff
whole episode on it:live at an event, so we bring our own wifi, you know what I mean?
whole episode on it:So like, whenever Ecamm is showing up to an event, we would bring a pocket
whole episode on it:wifi in order to put signal, but I don't know, like if you're going to
whole episode on it:be a guest on somebody's show, and I know you want to promote your stuff and
whole episode on it:you want to be out there, but if the timing's gonna put you to where you have
whole episode on it:to stream from the cafe or whatever, cancel the appointment, change it.
whole episode on it:Like, don't be that person that shows up on somebody else's stream from a cafe, you
whole episode on it:know better cause you, you're a streamer, so you know that that's not gonna work
whole episode on it:right now if you're at Cafe Max at Apple where you're sitting on the monkey brains
whole episode on it:backbone, all right, that's different.
whole episode on it:But like from the Starbucks, no fam don't do that.
whole episode on it:Do you know what I learned recently that I don't even know why I didn't think about
whole episode on it:this, but check your local libraries.
whole episode on it:I know that this is insane to say, but there are a number of libraries
whole episode on it:out there that actually have recording spaces that you can rent
whole episode on it:for free because it's a library.
whole episode on it:So if you have a guest that's like, you know, oh, I, you know, they live in the
whole episode on it:middle of nowhere or they're concerned about their internet connection, that's
whole episode on it:something you can suggest that makes you a great host to be able to give them
whole episode on it:additional resources, especially those that are free or really affordable.
whole episode on it:So you could offer for them to go in,
whole episode on it:you know, who else has that, Katie?
whole episode on it:Your cable access.
whole episode on it:You know every cable company has to have, they have to have a cable access thing.
whole episode on it:It's a federal requirement.
whole episode on it:So here it's called a lolo, but they have rooms set up, right, and we're
whole episode on it:talking studio rooms where they get to go in there and look like freaking Oprah
whole episode on it:with all the equipment and everything.
whole episode on it:So send them there or like, again, if it's that important to you,
whole episode on it:you can find in the community, in the Ecamm community, guess what?
whole episode on it:We have a lot of people with streaming knowledge know-how and equipment, right?
whole episode on it:So if I had a person that I wanted to interview somewhere in the greater
whole episode on it:Bostonian area and I was worried about them, I'll be like, Hey Jill, listen,
whole episode on it:can you go over to this person's office and set up, you know, your
whole episode on it:little Canon M 50 in the microphone and everything for them I need to
whole episode on it:do this stream is super important.
whole episode on it:You know, I'll throw you like 200 bones or whatever and she'll be like, yeah, bet.
whole episode on it:You know what I'm saying?
whole episode on it:So like Katie's right.
whole episode on it:Like be, be a good host just like you was going clean your living
whole episode on it:room and then serve up, you know, the little horse divorce.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:All right, let's go to page two, Luis.
whole episode on it:This is fun to get to boss Luis around.
whole episode on it:All right, so these have changed, Doc has told me, so we need to update this,
whole episode on it:but there are instances where again, people who are not on live streams
whole episode on it:and podcasts every single day may not think to do things like turning on
whole episode on it:their do not disturb mode, or making sure that they're in a quiet space or
whole episode on it:double checking privacy settings to make sure that nothing gets in the way
whole episode on it:of them being able to be successful.
whole episode on it:And I cannot say this enough, your guests are not going to think about
whole episode on it:your interview until 10 minutes before they have to call in.
whole episode on it:So you need to give them this information upfront.
whole episode on it:You need to force them to go through all of these, any kind of settings, any
whole episode on it:kind of, you know, anything that you need them to do, you need to give it to
whole episode on it:them enough in advance and set a time with them where you are either walking
whole episode on it:them through it or double checking and make sure that they have done it.
whole episode on it:So this page, if you are listening and not watching, really just
whole episode on it:outlines that you need to make sure that your do not disturb is on.
whole episode on it:You need to make sure that you have an internet connection,
whole episode on it:you have a microphone, you have headphones or a headset.
whole episode on it:Like these are things that again, like they may seem obvious to us who are doing
whole episode on it:this often, they may not be obvious to the woodworker down the street who I'm
whole episode on it:having join me for my woodworking podcast.
whole episode on it:Maybe he's not on all the time on video and doesn't think about it.
whole episode on it:Yeah, maybe, I'm using woodworking for all the obvious reasons.
whole episode on it:But I was like, Hey, I, this wood worker knows what he is doing.
whole episode on it:Hey, like, hello,
whole episode on it:you're an exception to the rule of wood workers.
whole episode on it:You're a hundred percent correct, right?
whole episode on it:Like, set your people up for the success and then your job will be easier.
whole episode on it:I think this one is such a great one because again, we talked about it briefly.
whole episode on it:The internet, the microphone and the headset.
whole episode on it:The headset is so key and people say, well, I have guests that
whole episode on it:are reluctant to wear a headset.
whole episode on it:It's your show.
whole episode on it:Tell 'em no.
whole episode on it:Then, I'm sorry, like I, it,
whole episode on it:you can also recommend or send them one that is not as obvious.
whole episode on it:Like, again, I'm not wearing this.
whole episode on it:I could have this behind me so that it's really not a, I don't care.
whole episode on it:So for me, whatever, but I could put it behind me or I could hide it in
whole episode on it:my shirt or I could send them the one that would make them comfortable.
whole episode on it:Yeah,
whole episode on it:that's what they think headphones mean and what I like to throw at them, like
whole episode on it:even when people that believe that or think that, I like to show them the shows
whole episode on it:like, you know, Howard Stern or Don I, or you know, Mike and them in the morning.
whole episode on it:The reason why even on broadcast networks, the pros are still wearing cans.
whole episode on it:It's cuz that's the right answer.
whole episode on it:Like you are a yoga instructor from freaking Bedago Creek, Louisiana.
whole episode on it:You ain't that important not to wear headphones on the internet because right
whole episode on it:now, like Brent Musburger will have headphones on the sidelines of a game or
whole episode on it:Chick Hern, you know, when he doing the Lakers game, he got them headphones on.
whole episode on it:So how do you think you're cooler than the broadcast professionals that
whole episode on it:we've been watching for 50 years?
whole episode on it:It just doesn't make sense.
whole episode on it:So sometimes it just, maybe you have much nicer ways of explaining that to people.
whole episode on it:I don't really care.
whole episode on it:Like my show is more important than, you know, someone's feelings.
whole episode on it:I'm gonna just tell 'em your feelings don't matter.
whole episode on it:Fact is you need to wear headphones.
whole episode on it:So simple.
whole episode on it:Yeah, exactly.
whole episode on it:I mean, we have literally written here in the, in this one,
whole episode on it:headphones are must for interviews.
whole episode on it:This helps with removing any echo.
whole episode on it:So for us it's mandatory.
whole episode on it:And also this is why.
whole episode on it:It helps to reduce any kind of audio issue.
whole episode on it:So I think saying what's necessary and then giving some kind of
whole episode on it:explanation as to why it should matter to your guest as well.
whole episode on it:They don't want to sound bad on your podcast, I would assume.
whole episode on it:Otherwise it's the wrong guest.
whole episode on it:Like if the guest wants to convince sound bed, it's the wrong guest.
whole episode on it:No, no, this sounds good enough.
whole episode on it:I was like, alright.
whole episode on it:No, then you already know you messed up.
whole episode on it:And so this, you know what, what messes it up is people, they are
whole episode on it:reluctant to ask people for the time to do the guest check ahead of time.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:I think like, I already feel like I'm bothering these people and
whole episode on it:then so like to ask them to come on early to check your stuff.
whole episode on it:Every podcast of merit that I've ever been on, they're like, I know you're
whole episode on it:Doc and know how your equipment works.
whole episode on it:You still gotta come to the,
whole episode on it:you still gotta come in.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:And I'm like, I laugh at that, but it's true.
whole episode on it:Right.
whole episode on it:And you'd be amazed sometimes it's a good thing we did, you know what I mean?
whole episode on it:So
whole episode on it:Well, yeah, because people like you who know all of the stuff are still tinkering.
whole episode on it:So like you could have changed some of your settings or like how, what
whole episode on it:they wanted you to look or sound like, maybe different than what
whole episode on it:you had your setting sounded like.
whole episode on it:It also gives the host the opportunity to walk through all of the scenes or
whole episode on it:the flow or the layout of what the show is gonna look like and allows
whole episode on it:the guests the opportunity to better understand and see the show structure.
whole episode on it:So it's like, okay, we're gonna start with this intro music and
whole episode on it:we'll be chatting through that.
whole episode on it:You'll be on within five minutes and then it's gonna come to
whole episode on it:just us talking back and forth.
whole episode on it:Do you have any slides or anything you wanna share or share a screen?
whole episode on it:We can add that in here.
whole episode on it:Like it gives kind of the opportunity to understand what the big picture is gonna
whole episode on it:be like, and gives the guest opportunity to say, oh actually I wanted to be able
whole episode on it:to do an overhead shot of my hands to demo my awesome woodworking project.
whole episode on it:Or I wanna go over here and be able to do this, you know, extra thing.
whole episode on it:So it all comes down to how you position it to your guests.
whole episode on it:And what matters most is, you know what kind of show you wanna have.
whole episode on it:You should be looking for the guests to have the most awesome, amazing
whole episode on it:experience that they tell all of their friends how amazing your podcast was,
whole episode on it:that they wanna share it, they wanna, they're excited about the experience
whole episode on it:for a number of different reasons.
whole episode on it:Make it as easy as possible.
whole episode on it:Make each one of those steps that, you know are mandatory, super exciting.
whole episode on it:Like the show is an hour long, but we are gonna jump on a half an hour early.
whole episode on it:So it's an hour and a half total time of your time during that setup time, like
whole episode on it:we're gonna be backstage hanging out in the green room, we're gonna go through
whole episode on it:the show like we're gonna, you know, I'm gonna introduce you to my producer.
whole episode on it:We're gonna make it sound really fun and awesome because it is.
whole episode on it:It should be like that experience should be fun.
whole episode on it:So true.
whole episode on it:You know what's funny is I look at the first masterclass we did with
whole episode on it:Speedify and Alec comes on and after seeing our setup and stuff, yeah,
whole episode on it:Alex, the CEO of Speedify, right?
whole episode on it:He was like, Ryan, what do you guys doing to me?
whole episode on it:Let's get this studio set up.
whole episode on it:Now.
whole episode on it:He set his office up.
whole episode on it:Now his is cooler than ours.
whole episode on it:He got lights, he got his mic.
whole episode on it:Like, he got the, he got the vibe going.
whole episode on it:Like he really, after seeing what we were talking about, He went and made
whole episode on it:a space in his company and they do a livestream every week like we do.
whole episode on it:And it's, they're good stuff, you know, so you be amazed.
whole episode on it:Sometimes you're actually helping that person out in the long run and they'll
whole episode on it:start to understand why it's important.
whole episode on it:And I have completely through the doing guests when I was,
whole episode on it:you know, not say, working here.
whole episode on it:I would have people that wanna sign up for Ecamm after they see the process.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:And, and that just gives you an opportunity to flex your affiliate game.
whole episode on it:You know what I mean?
whole episode on it:You have somebody in the show, it's so smooth, they're like,
whole episode on it:wait a minute, that was gravy.
whole episode on it:Like, how'd you do that?
whole episode on it:Ecamm, here you go.
whole episode on it:Here's my link.
whole episode on it:So you'd be surprised.
whole episode on it:All right, let's shoot to the next page.
whole episode on it:All right, awesome.
whole episode on it:So we're continuing here.
whole episode on it:So in addition to all those things, microphone, headphones, good internet,
whole episode on it:you also need to have good lighting.
whole episode on it:Here's what that means, you know, so here is the best way to be successful and
whole episode on it:have your shot look as best as possible.
whole episode on it:And then again, camera.
whole episode on it:We're not under any assumptions that every single guest that we bring
whole episode on it:on is gonna have an awesome Sony mirrorless camera, but there are
whole episode on it:tons of options out there that are better than their built-in webcams.
whole episode on it:So highlighting that out, or explaining what options they can have.
whole episode on it:Like you can use your phone connected with an app like Camo, like it, there
whole episode on it:are tons of options out there, but just make it as easy as possible or
whole episode on it:at least put it in their mind to start thinking about it so that you can
whole episode on it:follow up later with a phone call or by email with some additional information.
whole episode on it:Hey, did you get my checklist?
whole episode on it:Are you all set to go with all of your equipment?
whole episode on it:Any questions, anything you need, like you've set that up to be successful.
whole episode on it:So, again, like we have built into this checklist.
whole episode on it:Here's some of the affordable options that we have for a simple studio.
whole episode on it:Here's the full list that links back to our kit.co.
whole episode on it:If they buy any of those items, that's the list.
whole episode on it:We get an affiliate kickback.
whole episode on it:So there's, you can be helpful, but still helping yourself as
whole episode on it:well as helping your guest.
whole episode on it:And there's a ton of ways to be able to do this that make it as easy
whole episode on it:as possible for everyone involved.
whole episode on it:Yep.
whole episode on it:The thing that most people don't realize about using that phone
whole episode on it:as a camera is how good it is.
whole episode on it:It's so good.
whole episode on it:So good, when you teach them that, you'll be like, I can't believe I
whole episode on it:haven't been doing this all along.
whole episode on it:And I'm like, yeah, man.
whole episode on it:You know, like, and then they'll say, well, how am I going to hold it up?
whole episode on it:Or whatever.
whole episode on it:I mean, fam, for 10 bucks, you can send them something to hold it up.
whole episode on it:But I've showed people how to like, just take tape and to like blue tape the back
whole episode on it:of their case and turn it around and then flip the tape and stick it to the
whole episode on it:back of their screen and just have it hanging in the middle of their screen.
whole episode on it:You know, I'm like, you can just tape it up there for now.
whole episode on it:But once they know what's possible, Oh, they're, they'll be your friend forever.
whole episode on it:Like, I never even knew this.
whole episode on it:I'm gonna use this for all of my meetings.
whole episode on it:You know?
whole episode on it:So you'd be amazed.
whole episode on it:And again, if they don't have a Camo, hey, the app store fam,
whole episode on it:you can send somebody an app.
whole episode on it:You just cover it and send it, you know?
whole episode on it:So
whole episode on it:yeah, I just think laying it out, they may not pick any of these things and
whole episode on it:that's fine, but you've given them some ideas and you've shown that you care
whole episode on it:about them being successful on your show.
whole episode on it:Like you, you want them to show up looking their best because they have
whole episode on it:important information that you want your listeners and viewers to hear
whole episode on it:So, yeah, so I think it's important.
whole episode on it:You just said something very valuable, and I want to take one
whole episode on it:more second to speak on this.
whole episode on it:If you or that guest, were going to be a guest on a television show,
whole episode on it:they will send you a list of specs.
whole episode on it:Every show that I've ever worked with, we have a list of specs of
whole episode on it:what it requires to be a show.
whole episode on it:If you go to a concert and you're going to go watch, you know, Nora
whole episode on it:Jones sit down and sing, Nora sends a rider and on that rider she
whole episode on it:requests this amplifier with this microphone, with this type of monitor.
whole episode on it:And we have to go and acquire that to do the show, right?
whole episode on it:We are trying to align our podcast and things to what we're
whole episode on it:taking over the broadcast base.
whole episode on it:Cause people are stopping watching normal entertainment and they're
whole episode on it:watching things like this.
whole episode on it:So you have just as much right to ask for these things as if
whole episode on it:they were going to be on Colbert.
whole episode on it:Because trust me, Stephen Colbert, people would send him this list and if they
whole episode on it:didn't follow it, they ain't coming on.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:And it's not, I, you know, I see, I know.
whole episode on it:We're not, we, I know we always pull questions from the guest,
whole episode on it:but this is a, this is a good one.
whole episode on it:So Jonathan says, thanks for this.
whole episode on it:I always feel like I'm inconveniencing the guests with all of my requests.
whole episode on it:I'm glad to hear it's not taboo to ask.
whole episode on it:Oh, I was gonna say a bad word just then.
whole episode on it:Ooh.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:I pick one of the letters that comes after e that.
whole episode on it:It's your show, fam.
whole episode on it:It is your show.
whole episode on it:Your quality should be more important than anything because you are
whole episode on it:the representation of the guest.
whole episode on it:If I'm gonna have a guest on this show, I am representing the Flow Riders.
whole episode on it:I represent Ethan, Jonathan, Gretchen, Paul, Steven, like I represent Michelle.
whole episode on it:I represent y'all.
whole episode on it:So what kind of friend am I to y'all if I let somebody come
whole episode on it:up here and be faulty with you?
whole episode on it:Yeah, yeah.
whole episode on it:And I would trust too, that like, I can see how you would feel that way, Jonathan,
whole episode on it:but I think what makes it easier or what I at least I think makes it easier is if
whole episode on it:you can get a really tight process down.
whole episode on it:It's not like you are inconvenience, it's not like you're emailing them or
whole episode on it:calling them like every day for the week.
whole episode on it:Leading up to the interview being like, oh.
whole episode on it:And also like, do you have a microphone?
whole episode on it:Okay.
whole episode on it:Okay, good.
whole episode on it:You know, I'm gonna hang up now.
whole episode on it:Oh, oh.
whole episode on it:I, um, and also like, you know, you really need to be in like a quiet room.
whole episode on it:Like having it all upfront, giving them space and then following back up again
whole episode on it:for this is the process of my show.
whole episode on it:I'm gonna book you part of the booking processes.
whole episode on it:I'm gonna send you this checklist.
whole episode on it:Once you've reviewed this checklist, we have a follow up call where we go
whole episode on it:through and you can ask any questions.
whole episode on it:Cause I want you, guest, to be successful.
whole episode on it:You know, 30 minutes before the show, we're gonna jump back in
whole episode on it:and we're gonna do, you know, our sound check and our test.
whole episode on it:And it's gonna be this really fun experience.
whole episode on it:You've given them from the very beginning what the experience is
whole episode on it:gonna be like to be on the show.
whole episode on it:They understand it's gonna be this amount of time total as an investment.
whole episode on it:They can choose whether or not they wanna be on the show.
whole episode on it:Oh no, I didn't realize it was gonna be an hour and a half.
whole episode on it:I don't actually have time for that.
whole episode on it:No problem.
whole episode on it:No problem.
whole episode on it:So that's where I think it's a mindset to think through.
whole episode on it:I think Doc is absolutely right.
whole episode on it:It's your show, but I also think we all need to get in
whole episode on it:the better mindset of being.
whole episode on it:I think that is being respectful of other people's time.
whole episode on it:Look, this is the commitment that it takes to be a guest on the show.
whole episode on it:This is the process.
whole episode on it:You know it upfront, you can build that into your schedule.
whole episode on it:If your schedule can't handle that, no problem.
whole episode on it:No problem.
whole episode on it:And you know what?
whole episode on it:I think what Marie says is very, very important.
whole episode on it:I wanna make sure this doesn't go unhighlighted.
whole episode on it:The quality of your show is the reason why they agreed to be on your show.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:So why would you let them?
whole episode on it:Why would you downplay that?
whole episode on it:Yeah, and Jonathan, I'm clipping your comment because I wanna make
whole episode on it:a whole Reel using your comment because it is that important.
whole episode on it:You are definitely not inconveniencing them.
whole episode on it:What you would be inconveniencing them with is if they came up looking
whole episode on it:weak sauce on your show, right?
whole episode on it:Because that's a public thing that's now out there and it never goes away.
whole episode on it:And the minute someone looks really, really bad on an interview, you don't
whole episode on it:wanna be the person that caused that.
whole episode on it:Let them be weak sauce looking on Murray Show not yours.
whole episode on it:You don't wanna be responsible.
whole episode on it:So I think that was such a great comment.
whole episode on it:And yeah, like I love it.
whole episode on it:This is why we do live tapings.
whole episode on it:Cause we got good get we got good people in the chat.
whole episode on it:Right.
whole episode on it:We're, we gotta fly through the rest of this stuff quickly
whole episode on it:cuz we've been diving deep.
whole episode on it:So the next couple pages here are specific to the interviewing
whole episode on it:experience and process within Ecamm.
whole episode on it:We hope that you are using Ecamm.
whole episode on it:If you're not, no worries, but you should be explaining what the experience is
whole episode on it:gonna be like when they click that link.
whole episode on it:People don't wanna just click a link randomly and not know what the experience
whole episode on it:is gonna be like on the other side.
whole episode on it:So it's, what browser do they need to use?
whole episode on it:Is there a specific kind of computer or phone or something
whole episode on it:that they're joining with?
whole episode on it:Is the tool that you're using gonna immediately pop them up on screen?
whole episode on it:In which case, that might be jarring to some people if they're not quite ready.
whole episode on it:Explain that process out.
whole episode on it:However it is.
whole episode on it:In Ecamm it's really easy.
whole episode on it:They click a link with their favorite internet browser.
whole episode on it:They can select their camera and their microphone.
whole episode on it:They enter their name and they're into the studio and it's very clearly
whole episode on it:indicated whether or not they are live on air or the broadcast is being
whole episode on it:recorded or they're just in off air mode and they're having a conversation.
whole episode on it:Lay that out so that, ideally, you know, video or visuals or something so that
whole episode on it:when they click the link, they feel confident that they're not just gonna
whole episode on it:be entered immediately into the show.
whole episode on it:Like you wanna make them feel the level of security.
whole episode on it:Otherwise, you may have guests who are panicked or are coming in like
whole episode on it:feeling a little bit nervous, and you don't want that energy on your show.
whole episode on it:You want them to come in feeling confident, ready to discuss the topic.
whole episode on it:That is going to be the main part of the show.
whole episode on it:Do yourself a favor and record yourself a video of what it's
whole episode on it:like to be in the guest mode.
whole episode on it:You can see that weird dude with the hat in the next slide a little bit.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:Click through Luis.
whole episode on it:Scroll down.
whole episode on it:Yeah, so if you record yourself real quick, end the guest mode,
whole episode on it:just do a screen capture of, Hey gang, this is what it looks like.
whole episode on it:If you click down here, you're gonna wanna select the name of your camera,
whole episode on it:maybe your phone, whatever's you're gonna want to click here to make sure
whole episode on it:that we are on, you know, whatever your sound interface is, if you record a
whole episode on it:video like this to just give them the instructions, it will be so helpful.
whole episode on it:And then also, if you explain to them the mute button, the screen
whole episode on it:share button and the hang up.
whole episode on it:I recently had a guest on who's been an Ecamm user for like three years.
whole episode on it:Solid, but they had never been in guest mode.
whole episode on it:And when I told them to hit the screen share, they was like, what screen share?
whole episode on it:And I was like, wait, you'd never been
whole episode on it:You never seen the guest interface before?
whole episode on it:And they're like, no.
whole episode on it:And I was like, oh, that's funny.
whole episode on it:You should definitely experience it and call back.
whole episode on it:This is why you should be a guest on other kin folks show first.
whole episode on it:Right.
whole episode on it:So that you know what it's like so you can walk them through the process.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:And remember that like most people who are not in this space who don't have their
whole episode on it:own shows, who are not doing this often.
whole episode on it:It's already a little bit, they already have the heart going a little bit.
whole episode on it:They're already feeling a little bit nervous.
whole episode on it:They want to do their best and so you wanna eliminate any other
whole episode on it:extra nerves that can come up.
whole episode on it:So really giving them kind of a good understanding of what it's gonna be like.
whole episode on it:Plus the sound check is gonna make them feel confident.
whole episode on it:They're like, oh yeah, I'm gonna click through, you know, Doc's smiling face
whole episode on it:is gonna be on the other side and we're gonna chat for a little bit.
whole episode on it:Banter.
whole episode on it:I'm gonna feel good and calm and deep breaths before we actually dive in.
whole episode on it:So like you're giving them that experience upfront, which, whether
whole episode on it:or not they realize it is just gonna make for a better interview.
whole episode on it:You're gonna calm them down.
whole episode on it:They're gonna feel better because they know what's coming next.
whole episode on it:People don't like to not know what's coming next.
whole episode on it:They just don't.
whole episode on it:Not fans of that.
whole episode on it:Surprise!
whole episode on it:Surprise!
whole episode on it:We should make this into it.
whole episode on it:I'm sure we probably have it somewhere, but yeah, Doc's right.
whole episode on it:Having a video version of it is also great, cuz some people are gonna wanna
whole episode on it:be able to read through this and see visuals, but some people are gonna
whole episode on it:wanna just click and have a video walkthrough or an audio walkthrough.
whole episode on it:So having that would be helpful.
whole episode on it:If you don't have time to record this video, Adrian has one,
whole episode on it:Kirk has one, Diana has one.
whole episode on it:I think we have one on the channel.
whole episode on it:Just steal one.
whole episode on it:Somebody else's.
whole episode on it:It's better if you do it cuz it's their personal experience.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:You know, if you're chicken whatever, then come and talk to
whole episode on it:me so I can beat that outta you.
whole episode on it:So you can un-chicken you.
whole episode on it:Yeah, I can un-chicken you.
whole episode on it:Oh, I can make chicken soup, no call back.
whole episode on it:I really think that you should just send them more than the
whole episode on it:videos that explains it through.
whole episode on it:It's super important and it will make them, like you said, you know, feel
whole episode on it:better, like, like Katie said, and they've already have an experience
whole episode on it:of what the interface looks like.
whole episode on it:It's not brand new when they first pop.
whole episode on it:Yeah, exactly.
whole episode on it:All right, next page.
whole episode on it:Ah, look at us.
whole episode on it:All right.
whole episode on it:So again, like this is, you know, a real deep dive.
whole episode on it:So if you're listening and you don't see these pop on over to
whole episode on it:YouTube so you can see them.
whole episode on it:But we outlined basically with a visual, like literally these are what all
whole episode on it:of the buttons and things are in the screen that you are seeing as a guest.
whole episode on it:So here's what you can control, here's where all the comments are coming through.
whole episode on it:And what's really important is if you're using Ecamm and many other similar
whole episode on it:tools have these kinds of features, but there is a space where they can
whole episode on it:see all of the comments coming through if there's a livestream element to it.
whole episode on it:But there's also a space where there is a guest chat, which depending on the
whole episode on it:kind of show that you have, might be incredibly important for you to let your
whole episode on it:guests know about that, you know, maybe something in the background that they may
whole episode on it:not want to be displaying or something caught in their teeth or something.
whole episode on it:This gives, you know, us the opportunity as host to be able to just subtly type
whole episode on it:a message over or, you know, how, what, what is the back channel communication?
whole episode on it:You need to let your guest know those kinds of things
whole episode on it:and where they can find it.
whole episode on it:In case something happens because often you're diving
whole episode on it:into the content of the show.
whole episode on it:And again, you want your guests to be as successful as possible, so you
whole episode on it:wanna be able to give them moments to be able to walk away or do something.
whole episode on it:And the indicators of being able to say, okay, hey, I'm gonna move you
whole episode on it:off screen so it's just me, so that you can get that outta your teeth.
whole episode on it:Like I, being able to have those channels and know for your guests to know where
whole episode on it:those things are is hugely important.
whole episode on it:And again, you do it once and you send it to everyone.
whole episode on it:So it's not like you have to reinvent the wheel each time.
whole episode on it:Reinvent the wheel.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:I would just take this and open it up in Canva and just make your own just.
whole episode on it:Yeah, steal this one.
whole episode on it:Just take Doc's picture, put your picture on top.
whole episode on it:Yeah, just cover, cover your face with me.
whole episode on it:And it is a whole, it's a whole thing.
whole episode on it:Now I will say something.
whole episode on it:This kind of doesn't matter.
whole episode on it:You can on, on number six, you can talk between dark mode and light mode.
whole episode on it:I tend to put people in dark mode on purpose for the simple reason that their
whole episode on it:monitor isn't changing their face light.
whole episode on it:I don't know if this will show up on my screen, but like when I do that, it
whole episode on it:changes the face light and I don't like that when they switch from scene to scene.
whole episode on it:One thing we didn't put in this list that we should probably
whole episode on it:update also let them know.
whole episode on it:If for any reason they need to look at something in a browser,
whole episode on it:open a different browser.
whole episode on it:Tell your guests never leave the tab that is the interview tab when you
whole episode on it:leave tabs in Chrome, especially if they have a weaker computer, Chrome goes
whole episode on it:up not using it, let me release that memory and things can go goofy, right?
whole episode on it:I told my users, Hey, none of your business what's going on in their browser,
whole episode on it:or use your phone or use your iPad.
whole episode on it:But if they need to look at a browser for something, see their notes, I will
whole episode on it:tell them to open Safari or Firefox, the additional browser, do that and
whole episode on it:leave that Chrome tab focused in the front as much as possible, unless
whole episode on it:they have a really powerful computer.
whole episode on it:Again, like all of these tips are things like, there's no worse feeling
whole episode on it:as a guest than when something goes wrong that's outside of your control.
whole episode on it:Like what, even if you've done a million interviews, there's no worse feeling
whole episode on it:than if a noise comes out from somewhere or your phone was supposed to be on do
whole episode on it:not disturb and starts ringing, like that jars you out of the energy and the
whole episode on it:thought that you were trying to get out.
whole episode on it:So letting people know about all of these upfront just reduces the chance
whole episode on it:of something like that happening.
whole episode on it:So it is really important and will make the show more successful across the board.
whole episode on it:Oh, here's a good one.
whole episode on it:Paul mentioned in the chat if you haven't been a guest on the show before
whole episode on it:you could reach out to the community, and many people would be more than
whole episode on it:happy to have you on as a guest and like a test inside the community.
whole episode on it:Wednesday at, I think it's 3:00 PM Eastern, Wednesday, 3:00 PM
whole episode on it:Eastern we're in the Discord.
whole episode on it:We have office hours.
whole episode on it:You can come in and just ask questions.
whole episode on it:I'm just sitting in there hanging out for like an hour or so.
whole episode on it:So you can come and ask anything, test anything, try anything.
whole episode on it:It is in the Discord, so you're gonna have to join the Discord, but I post
whole episode on it:the flyer inside the Ecamm community.
whole episode on it:So that should be like every Wednesday for the most part at 3:00 PM Eastern.
whole episode on it:And I forgot how that calculates to me.
whole episode on it:Ten.
whole episode on it:It's 10 my time.
whole episode on it:It's 10 my time.
whole episode on it:It's noon Paul's time.
whole episode on it:But yeah, just so if you wanna come in and, let me try to break some
whole episode on it:stuff while Doc is sitting here so I can swear to him directly.
whole episode on it:That's fine.
whole episode on it:I'm cool with that.
whole episode on it:You know, we wanna give you as many opportunities to solve
whole episode on it:these issues as possible.
whole episode on it:Yeah.
whole episode on it:Awesome.
whole episode on it:All right, next page, on the last page of this is just a reminder about
whole episode on it:the setup test slash soundcheck.
whole episode on it:So again, like I'm a big believer, and maybe this is a bad approach, but people
whole episode on it:like the idea of a digital green room.
whole episode on it:Make them feel like they're on Oprah, or like one of these, we're gonna,
whole episode on it:we're gonna hang out in the green room, we're gonna do a sound check and we're
whole episode on it:gonna go through the flow of the show.
whole episode on it:You can ask any questions, grab a drink, grab a whatever.
whole episode on it:Like we're, this is gonna be a laid back fun experience before we go live
whole episode on it:or before we start the recording.
whole episode on it:So make it feel less like this mandatory, like frumpy thing that needs to be
whole episode on it:done and more like, this is part of the overall experience and it's gonna be fun.
whole episode on it:This is where we, you know, get silly.
whole episode on it:We're gonna go through some of the questions again, give
whole episode on it:them a chance to casually talk without any strings attached.
whole episode on it:I don't know.
whole episode on it:I think it's about how you sell it.
whole episode on it:Maybe you don't wanna call it a sound check.
whole episode on it:Maybe there's a cool, I don't know other term that you wanna talk it through, but
whole episode on it:I would build it into the overall time investment of your show and make it just
whole episode on it:seem as awesome and fun as it can be.
whole episode on it:We do a sound check before this show every single week and it's my favorite
whole episode on it:part of the show because it's just like catching up in silly updates and you know,
whole episode on it:Luis is going through all the different scenes and often there's some weird thing
whole episode on it:that pops up that we solve on the fly.
whole episode on it:And it's fun.
whole episode on it:So make it, yeah, make it fun.
whole episode on it:Make it feel like it's awesome.
whole episode on it:Here.
whole episode on it:Let's just go ahead and put this out there.
whole episode on it:We normally come in earlier, we have our setup and whatever.
whole episode on it:The one time where I was bumped against the schedule and we didn't
whole episode on it:do the tech check, it broke.
whole episode on it:It went to hell.
whole episode on it:It went to hell.
whole episode on it:Yeah, it went way south.
whole episode on it:Now, here we are, 23, 24 episodes deep.
whole episode on it:Pretty much.
whole episode on it:Never a problem.
whole episode on it:The one time we skipped the check.
whole episode on it:It was like, Hey, hey, Katie.
whole episode on it:Katie, what?
whole episode on it:Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
whole episode on it:So, uh, yeah, don't skip it.
whole episode on it:Right?
whole episode on it:It's like I'm saying, it's just about flying the airplane.
whole episode on it:Man, you cannot skip that safety briefing.
whole episode on it:Here's what's crazy, and I didn't know this until it happened to
whole episode on it:me flying home from Leap, right?
whole episode on it:After Luis dropped me off at the airport, thank you, Luis.
whole episode on it:And we flew.
whole episode on it:We were on our way to Honolulu, and I had a direct flight from New York to Honolulu.
whole episode on it:Something happened, someone got sick in the plane, and so we had
whole episode on it:to take a dip in San Francisco.
whole episode on it:So we were in the ocean.
whole episode on it:We turned around, we came back, we landed in San Fran.
whole episode on it:The medics were able to take care of that person and get them straight.
whole episode on it:It was like a seizure type situation.
whole episode on it:And then we were on the tarmac for like two hours or so, waiting for them to
whole episode on it:give us, to go ahead to take off again.
whole episode on it:Nobody left the plane other than the sick person and their significant other.
whole episode on it:When they closed the door and lined us up on SFO to takeoff again,
whole episode on it:they redid the safety briefing.
whole episode on it:They're like, one more time.
whole episode on it:Cuz we know you didn't listen originally.
whole episode on it:No.
whole episode on it:So it goes to show you that the FAA people are far more smarter than most of us.
whole episode on it:Even if your butt has never left that seat, no one went to out the plane at all.
whole episode on it:We weren't allowed to deplane because there's whole different
whole episode on it:regulations if you allow people to deplane what they have to do to the
whole episode on it:plane to put it back in the earth.
whole episode on it:So all they did was kiss us with some fuel and while they were
whole episode on it:kissing us with some fuel, they went through the safety briefing.
whole episode on it:Again.
whole episode on it:It's that important.
whole episode on it:And so that's what I'm saying, do not, once you get your checklist up, don't
whole episode on it:tune this out and sort of what Marie said in the chat, this is your show.
whole episode on it:Don't allow your guests to bypass it.
whole episode on it:It's very important.
whole episode on it:And yeah, even if you know what you're doing and you're one of the people that
whole episode on it:covers customer support, you still need to do it because hey, it can go silly.
whole episode on it:If you don't believe us, check out the recording from last week.
whole episode on it:It sure can.
whole episode on it:We did it.
whole episode on it:We got through our whole thing, and I, again, I can't stress enough that having
whole episode on it:guests can be an awesome experience for your podcast or your live show.
whole episode on it:But having a process and whatever that means to you.
whole episode on it:It could be a video checklist, it could just be a set of steps that you follow
whole episode on it:and that triggers little reminder.
whole episode on it:Whatever your process and your experience is for your guests, having it so that
whole episode on it:you can easily repeat it as you have more and more guests on is hugely important
whole episode on it:and makes a really big difference.
whole episode on it:So don't skip it, don't...
whole episode on it:do it twice.
whole episode on it:Do what Hawaii Airlines did and do that thing twice.
whole episode on it:I just love the fact that you're now officially a naturalized American
whole episode on it:because you said process and not process.
whole episode on it:So take that Cat and Keeley.
whole episode on it:We got her.
whole episode on it:She's ours now.
whole episode on it:I've always been, I'm an anomaly because I feel like no matter I've lived in a
whole episode on it:ton of different cities across Canada and the US and no matter what city I'm
whole episode on it:in, I always say the wrong thing or haven't been to everyone's favorite place.
whole episode on it:Like the amount of times where they're like, oh yeah, you know,
whole episode on it:we were at Skips last week.
whole episode on it:And I'm like, what's Skips?
whole episode on it:And they're like, what's Skips ? Haven't you lived here, for like..
whole episode on it:I'm like I, I get that all the time.
whole episode on it:And I get that with what I say.
whole episode on it:They're like, he like, oh, you don't Like I, there's expressions
whole episode on it:that I use that no one else uses.
whole episode on it:I now I'm just a mix of all of Canada in the United States.
whole episode on it:Wait until she starts hitting them with the Doc-isms?
whole episode on it:Hey, that was, that was us to Luis in Bake House and then after Luis
whole episode on it:had Bake House that was Luis to everybody else that haven't been to
whole episode on it:Bake House, you don't know about that?
whole episode on it:Ham and Manchego.
whole episode on it:Oh, we did it.
whole episode on it:We did it.
whole episode on it:Doc we're overtime.
whole episode on it:So apologies to Doc's people who are waiting.
whole episode on it:Actually Paul changed the stream, so that was all good.
whole episode on it:Oh nice.
whole episode on it:Thank you Paul.
whole episode on it:Thank you Paul.
whole episode on it:Paul.
whole episode on it:See Paul is wicked.
whole episode on it:What you need to do for your show is get yourself a moderator.
whole episode on it:I'm just saying.
whole episode on it:Or bring Paul onto your show.
whole episode on it:He threw a comment up in there while we were, while we were streaming this.
whole episode on it:So if you're listening or you're watching this, people like Paul who like know
whole episode on it:all the stuff, those are great guests.
whole episode on it:And Paul has not been a guest on as many shows as he should be.
whole episode on it:So if you're looking for a great guest, yeah.
whole episode on it:Find the moderators, find the people who are in the weeds doing the stuff.
whole episode on it:They make awesome guests.
whole episode on it:Yep.
whole episode on it:All right, gang.
whole episode on it:That's it.
whole episode on it:We wrapped it.
whole episode on it:We did it.
whole episode on it:Thank you guys so much and don't forget, you can catch us at flow
whole episode on it:dot Ecamm dot com where all the places podcasts getting is got.
whole episode on it:You can get us if you like to leave us and review, please do
whole episode on it:you do that over on Apple Podcast.
whole episode on it:See, I said it right, Katie.
