And I will take credit for today's topic, which is gonna send Doc into

spirals because we're talking about podcast resolutions and Doc's first

resolution is that there should be no resolutions, but we already have an

Speaker:

episode called podcast planning, which is really what this is so whether or not

Speaker:

you wanna call it a resolution or you wanna call it just a plan for this year,

Speaker:

I just thought it would be fun for us to live talk while you are either live

Speaker:

watching or replay watching or listening later next week when this episode

Speaker:

drops on all of the podcast platforms.

Speaker:

What are our plans for The Flow this year?

Speaker:

And we will live brainstorm and plan it.

Speaker:

And then we'll take all these ideas and we'll, and we'll roll with them

Speaker:

and run.

All right, so first, not to sound like a jerk, but I don't

Speaker:

care if I sound like a jerk.

Speaker:

I'm a very factual person.

Speaker:

Not pedantic to a fault, but I'm just a factual person.

Speaker:

I don't like fluffy stuff that doesn't math.

Speaker:

I don't like things that don't math.

Speaker:

I'm a Virgo, right?

Speaker:

Like, okay, if you want to give it some fluffy, I'll give you Virgo.

Speaker:

I don't even believe in half of that crap, but it doesn't math to

Speaker:

me because what happens is, first of all, Fuljens nailed it yesterday, my

Speaker:

podcast resolutions are 4K and 8K.

Speaker:

Fuljens absolutely nailed it yesterday.

Speaker:

The reason why I don't like resolutions is number one, it requires you to wait until

Speaker:

January 1st to make a positive action or change in your life, which is just silly.

Speaker:

These numbers are purely arbitrary.

Speaker:

Let's run it all the way back to, uou know, Gregorian people, the

Speaker:

calendar is freaking arbitrary.

Speaker:

At the end of the day, those numbers on that square boxes don't matter.

Speaker:

What matters is that you're doing stuff and you're moving forward

Speaker:

and you're making it happen.

Speaker:

So if you decide someday in February that you're gonna do this, and you just

Speaker:

start, then that is to me, is amazing.

Speaker:

If you decide on, say, February 10th, you're gonna start something

Speaker:

on March 1st, what the hell are you waiting two weeks for?

Speaker:

What is that extra two weeks gonna give you?

Speaker:

If it's preparedness and getting better, that's fine.

Speaker:

If you're just putting it off so you can have some arbitrary date,

Speaker:

you're kind of like setting yourself up for the first original hurdle.

Speaker:

So like I told my whole crew, we're not gonna wait until the new year

Speaker:

to get ready to plan the new year.

Speaker:

We started in November.

Speaker:

So that way we get to January one at full speed running as opposed

Speaker:

to starting cold on January 1st.

Speaker:

So this is why I hate resolutions because it builds unnecessary,

Speaker:

arbitrary blocks and the kind of people that need to make resolutions.

Speaker:

And let's be purely factual about this, the kind of people

Speaker:

that need to make resolutions.

Speaker:

You already have a block.

Speaker:

Because those of us that don't make them, we don't have those blocks.

Speaker:

We just run and hit the wall back up, hit it again.

Speaker:

So I say remove the blocks.

Speaker:

That'll be your first step to actually winning a resolution is

Speaker:

getting rid of these weird blocks that you put up for yourself.

Speaker:

So that's why.

Speaker:

I don't seem to sound goofy about it, but it's what it is.

Speaker:

Well, this particular title of today's podcast and the general topic, regardless

Speaker:

of whether or not we believe in it or wanna do it, actually plays into one

Speaker:

of the things that I would like to get better at this year for the podcast,

Speaker:

which is podcast titles and descriptions.

Speaker:

And just general SEO.

Speaker:

And so while I was thinking through what we wanted to talk about today,

Speaker:

really I wanted to talk about what the plan was for this year, what things

Speaker:

we have on the horizon, just be able to kind of brainstorm live, because

Speaker:

I know that many of you are thinking through, now that we have a new year.

Speaker:

What are the things that you wanna do with your podcast?

Speaker:

Maybe this is year you actually wanna start a podcast.

Speaker:

Maybe this is the year you wanna add video on.

Speaker:

So thinking it through, and again, we have an episode

Speaker:

already called podcast planning.

Speaker:

So I was like, okay, well people are looking for or thinking through

Speaker:

topics, it makes sense for the seo.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

A hundred percent.

Speaker:

It makes sense for SEO.

Speaker:

I will say that is definitely a huge push for us this year, is really going

Speaker:

through even past YouTube videos and doing a lot of that cleanup because

Speaker:

YouTube as a platform has changed really dramatically over the last year and we'll

Speaker:

continue to change dramatically this year.

Speaker:

So going back and just really making sure.

Speaker:

We use TubeBuddy right now and a couple of other tools, but you know, with

Speaker:

TubeBuddy you can see like on a video that you've uploaded or a previously

Speaker:

live video, what your percentage out of a hundred is for how SEO

Speaker:

rich or SEO friendly your video is.

Speaker:

So like any of those ones that are sitting below like 70 or 80%, I definitely wanna

Speaker:

go back and say Hey, what happened here?

Speaker:

Is it the topic of the video?

Speaker:

Is it something that we're missing in the keywords?

Speaker:

How can we really clean that up?

Speaker:

And specifically for The Flow, I think is gonna be huge as we think

Speaker:

through just, yeah, like what, you know, how are we talking about it?

Speaker:

What are the words we're using, what are the topics that we're covering?

Speaker:

You know what I think is awesome?

Speaker:

I think it's awesome that we have these shows and a lot of the shows

Speaker:

connect and compliment with each other.

Speaker:

So for instance, yesterday on E N N.

Speaker:

Ana and Fuljens, they were going on and they were talking about

Speaker:

some of the stuff that's happening with chatGPT and g p t three.

Speaker:

And so these other AI complimented tools.

Speaker:

I'm gonna do what in the industry we called a callback, but instead

Speaker:

of a callback to our own show.

Speaker:

I'm gonna do a callback to ENN yesterday when one of the things that Ana brought

Speaker:

up, and it was very insightful, she says, I'm just curious as to what people are

Speaker:

going to be able to do with this and how they can use it to make it work.

Speaker:

Now, naturally, whenever any new technology comes out, there's all the

Speaker:

people that are just running around scared like, oh, you know, chat G P

Speaker:

T is going to help students cheat.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

It's not.

Speaker:

Let's just get away from that.

Speaker:

What that means is that you're a teacher and you don't want to do the work to

Speaker:

learn how to teach different, because they said the same thing when we got

Speaker:

calculators, they said the same things when we got computers, they said the

Speaker:

same thing when we got iPhones, iPads, all of the above, and you know what?

Speaker:

Students don't cheat anymore.

Speaker:

Let's run this back and be factual.

Speaker:

If your students need to cheat, you are a horrible teacher.

Speaker:

Because if you're a good teacher, they got the information and

Speaker:

they don't need the cheat.

Speaker:

But nobody wants to take the response for that.

Speaker:

So it's easier to say that it's gonna make people cheat.

Speaker:

Anyway, off my soapbox, what this is going to allow you to do if you run your

Speaker:

titles and descriptions through an AI situation like Jasper or chat G P T.

Speaker:

In this particular case, Jasper would be better.

Speaker:

You will get better seo.

Speaker:

Here's the reason why.

Speaker:

They both pull from a knowledge base of the data that already

Speaker:

existed on the internet at the time.

Speaker:

So unless you're talking about something so topical that it's past

Speaker:

June of 2021, letting that generate the description and title for you, or

Speaker:

bless, take your title and description, throw it and say, improve it.

Speaker:

You know for a fact that that information is being pulled from the internet,

Speaker:

so therefore it already exists, so therefore it will align seo tighter

Speaker:

then if you just pull it out of the wonderful mind of yourself.

Speaker:

That is one of the cheat codes.

Speaker:

If you want, if you wanna learn nothing else about this program because you're

Speaker:

scared of it, whatever, put your fear in the closet and just search how to

Speaker:

do better s e o using AI that will fix.

Speaker:

And matter of fact VidIQ actually gives you

Speaker:

s E i, descri, S E I...

Speaker:

aI descriptions and AI title enhancements.

Speaker:

So you put in your basics and you hit a button and it will run it through

Speaker:

a version of chat GPT that they have installed and sort of give you better

Speaker:

title and better descriptions because it know, it reads the whole YouTube.

Speaker:

So there you go.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And that and speaking of which, so that obviously relates directly

Speaker:

to how we wanna be able to kind of improve our discoverability

Speaker:

and just accessibility on YouTube.

Speaker:

But similarly, like I think we also could do a better job, or I would

Speaker:

like to dive a little bit deeper on going through our show notes

Speaker:

in Captivate and making sure, because in, in Captivate there is a section

Speaker:

as you know, Doc, but for anyone that doesn't use this tool or similar

Speaker:

tools, there's a section for our transcript, which is super helpful.

Speaker:

It's filled with all the incredible things.

Speaker:

Doc says, but it also has a show notes section where we could do a better job

Speaker:

of doing things like helpful links, information on the guests we bring on.

Speaker:

So right now we're just duplicating that from whatever

Speaker:

our description was on YouTube.

Speaker:

Fine.

Speaker:

But I think we could do a better job of adding in more additional resources.

Speaker:

Or maybe once the episode has already, we've already recorded the episode,

Speaker:

maybe we go back into that afterwards and add in anything that you know

Speaker:

is additional helpful information.

Speaker:

We talked about, like in this case, we mentioned Doc mentioned Jasper.

Speaker:

So maybe we wanna go back and say like, Hey, you wanna learn more about Jasper?

Speaker:

Here's the additional tool.

Speaker:

So I think really thinking that through or building that into our

Speaker:

process better is gonna help this podcast continue to grow and continue

Speaker:

to be helpful and relevant to people.

Speaker:

And I think is a really important way to spend our time this year is to really,

Speaker:

you know, make sure that all of the amazing content we're creating, whether

Speaker:

it's this show or other shows, are discoverable by really doubling down on

Speaker:

those amazing tools that are out there and on the basics of SEO and marketing

Speaker:

that we should be doing anyway, but are really easy to ignore when you're like,

Speaker:

ah, copy paste or template, or like doing it last minute because we forgot,

Speaker:

or all the other reasons that pop up.

Speaker:

I did mark this cause I think it's a good one.

Speaker:

Resolution one dive deeper into Captivate for us.

Speaker:

But I think I want, I put a, I put a print, a parenthetical on there that

Speaker:

says if you're someone else and you are using a different tool that you

Speaker:

have used like Ecamm, I know because you guys come to the demo as stuff

Speaker:

that you shouldn't know from day one.

Speaker:

If you've been half using a piece of software for a long time and getting away

Speaker:

with it, let's stop getting away with it.

Speaker:

Let's spend some time this year to dig deeper and so I

Speaker:

posted on LinkedIn yesterday.

Speaker:

LinkedIn is my, is in my resolution one sentence, if you

Speaker:

have to give it that terminology.

Speaker:

For me it's LinkedIn because I've been like just like running by

Speaker:

giving it a quick peck on the cheek and running home real fast

Speaker:

before her daddy came home for a long time, so, For me it's LinkedIn and I

Speaker:

posted on LinkedIn the other day when I was doing interview with Sally, and then

Speaker:

vice versa being interviewed on her show.

Speaker:

She told us last year that last year was gonna be her year for Ecamm.

Speaker:

Sally spent every waking minute that she had

Speaker:

extra from her business and she runs an incredible business fam.

Speaker:

She was learning deeper and deeper and deeper about Ecamm.

Speaker:

She spent an entire year making sure she got better at Ecamm

Speaker:

because it was gonna help her move the needle and the other tools.

Speaker:

I think what a lot of us do is we all buy these tools and

Speaker:

then we kind of half use them.

Speaker:

If another person says to me, I got a Rodecaster Pro and I only half use it.

Speaker:

I'm like, that's not something you should ever admit.

Speaker:

That's like admitting that you secretly fart in the back of the elevator.

Speaker:

Like don't admit that, fix that.

Speaker:

Like seriously, you can admit it to yourself, but you shouldn't be proud of

Speaker:

buying expensive tools and half using them cuz I will definitely judge you.

Speaker:

Put your money where your mouth is.

Speaker:

So Doc is absolutely right.

Speaker:

He has been spending more time there and I feel like for us last year,

Speaker:

for us as a business last year, we were really focused on growing and

Speaker:

fostering our community on Discord, and we'll definitely continue doing that.

Speaker:

We were also really focused on getting more content up in a more

Speaker:

relevant way on Instagram, and we saw really huge results from that.

Speaker:

Like, I completely agree.

Speaker:

I think being able to spend your time on the tools and in the

Speaker:

places that matter most and really understanding them is hugely important.

Speaker:

And I would say, yeah, put together, you know, put together and think through

Speaker:

your plan, but be able to connect those, be able to connect those dots.

Speaker:

So from my side, what we could do better again here for this specific

Speaker:

podcast is we started a few months back really using my time in Descript,

Speaker:

where I'm pulling the transcript to also create shorter video clips.

Speaker:

And so, you know, Caleb's been putting those out across different places.

Speaker:

But I think really doubling down on that and being able to pull out a lot more of

Speaker:

these like amazing tips now that we are 22 episodes in, we have more of that stuff.

Speaker:

We could be able to put those clips in a ton of different spaces.

Speaker:

As you said, maybe, you know, better collaboration between all of

Speaker:

the shows that Ecamm has as well.

Speaker:

So there's, I think, opportunities as you're diving deeper on LinkedIn and

Speaker:

as we're trying to get better at a few of these key platforms, figuring

Speaker:

out how to pull that story through.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So it's the same content that you're carrying across

Speaker:

all the different platforms.

Speaker:

You just gave me another really good, a good idea.

Speaker:

So one of the things that we should possibly do, not possibly

Speaker:

we should do it, period.

Speaker:

I'm, we should, we should do, yeah.

Speaker:

we're gonna build our to-do list off of this episode.

Speaker:

So somebody, Paul or Eden, or one of y'all is taking notes and giving us

I think that we should definitely use AMIE.

I think we should definitely use AMIE, which it, AMIE, for people who don't

use Captivate, it's a way to input advertisements or promotional things

into your podcast auto mechanically.

And what I mean by that yeah, is you basically upload the .wav file or the MP3

Speaker:

file for, that's gonna be your reader, your liner, and it will automatically

Speaker:

place it in places where you set markers.

Speaker:

So we can do a post roll, a pre-roll, we could do a mid-roll.

Speaker:

We could even put slots in where we know right before we break

Speaker:

into q and a, it like it would automatically throw it in ad.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

It's a really wonderful tool and I don't know if your platform has it,

Speaker:

but our platform does so switch to Captivate because it's really handy.

Speaker:

We used it perfectly for the sale for Cyber Weekend, and then we

Speaker:

should dive deeper into that.

Speaker:

Also, I think another thing in the, in going back to one, is that we should

Speaker:

work with using the guest sheet and the research note sheets in Captivate a little

Speaker:

deeper because then that automatically helps the show notes happen better.

Speaker:

So reality is we just gotta dig deeper into Captivate.

Speaker:

Exactly.

Speaker:

And not that we don't do like planning for this show, but I think, yeah, I

Speaker:

think forcing ourselves to kind of build out a guide that we can all see will

Speaker:

also help us as, right now we do have a, obviously a flow for the show, so

Speaker:

we have like, You know our kind of live sections where we're doing housekeeping

Speaker:

and welcome and just chatting in banter.

Speaker:

And then we go into the actual show itself, which usually not today,

Speaker:

but usually is split into three, you know, three main questions.

Speaker:

And then we have our live q and a at the end, but we don't have in that

Speaker:

flow, like as you said, the, you know, Pauses where we can, you know,

Speaker:

say, Hey, we're, we'll be right back, we're gonna go to this ad break.

Speaker:

And we could do something like that if we did wanna add in and be able

Speaker:

to, you know, feature other shows or upcoming events that that Ecamm

Speaker:

is doing or places that we're at.

Speaker:

And we do have all of those things.

Speaker:

So I think it would be, I completely agree.

Speaker:

I think,

Speaker:

having a structure that's outlined will help keep us on point and will

Speaker:

also help make the show notes better and will also help us leverage

Speaker:

AMIE and other tools better.

Speaker:

So a win all the way around to, you know, to be able to just have that document.

Speaker:

And I know that people like Jeff and Grace who run Social Media News Live,

Speaker:

which is a show that we partner with, they have a really great template for that.

Speaker:

So we certainly have some tools we can build out to be able

Speaker:

to use and share for sure.

Speaker:

All right.

I think topically I would like to see us, that's something that you and Luis and

Speaker:

I talked about a little bit yesterday.

Speaker:

I would like to see us do multi-part deep dives into a particular thing.

Speaker:

As you know, this month I'm diving into just getting

Speaker:

better with interviews, right?

Speaker:

My class starts on Saturday.

Speaker:

I got a bunch of folks signed up, and we're going to be just working on

Speaker:

helping people become better hosts.

Speaker:

You know, like, uh, I heard you when I was in Japan.

Speaker:

I was listening to you on the last week's show, not the one

Speaker:

that came out today, but prior.

Speaker:

The interview with Matt, or when, or when I forced my best friend Nat to join us?

Speaker:

Your friend.

Speaker:

You had your home girl.

Speaker:

She was really good by the way.

Speaker:

And you made a statement of, well, I'm not as good as like, you

Speaker:

know, pulling these off the top of my head or whatever, whatever.

Speaker:

And that's something that you just get from doing it more.

So I think that it'll be cool to deep dive into maybe how to get better at

pulling these nuggets out or doing, so some of that stuff will be covered in

interview class and then yeah, we can take that and turn that into a show.

But like dig digging deeper into things like that.

Speaker:

Digging deeper into, say audio editing if you don't have an editor, like how

Speaker:

to use compression, how to use eq.

Speaker:

Yes, Auphonic will fix a bunch of stuff, but it's also better if

Speaker:

you start it with a good thing.

Speaker:

You know what I mean?

Speaker:

The better stuff you throw it all on, the better it sounds comes out.

Speaker:

Like why is Doc always screaming about negative 16 L U F S, AKA loudness

Speaker:

under full scale, AKA K rated?

Speaker:

And why do I need to know such a complicated thing?

Speaker:

Because you do.

Speaker:

Every one of us, especially if you watch a and e have had this situation, A and e I

Speaker:

just wanna punch you in the face so hard.

Speaker:

The show is like, okay, then when we talking about this, and then

Speaker:

Thomas Jefferson came around and then would go to the commercial,

Speaker:

you feel depressed, take this.

Speaker:

And it's just loud.

Speaker:

Like the level between the show and the depression medication,

Speaker:

it jumps up like seven decibels.

Speaker:

And it's obnoxious.

Speaker:

It's super obnoxious.

Speaker:

A&E is the one station that does it, does it religiously.

Speaker:

Most of the other ones have had it, you know, sort of figured out.

Speaker:

If you think I'm joking, you can watch A&E today and you'll hear it instantly.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

It also happens with a, it happens with a lot of podcasts where if

Speaker:

they're part of like a network and the network is placing ads for them,

Speaker:

they're always like, you know, and we'll be right back after the break.

Speaker:

And then the ad that the network is placing is obsessively louder

Speaker:

or quieter than the show, and you're like, wait, no, down, up.

Speaker:

Buy another Paul Duncan mattress because Paul Duncan mattresses let you sleep.

Speaker:

Why does every podcast sell mattresses?

Speaker:

I just wanna know like, like really with every podcast sells

Speaker:

freaking mattresses and bras.

Speaker:

Not just mattresses.

Speaker:

Mattresses, bras, underwear, socks, lots of clothes, pretty clothes heavy.

Speaker:

Websites.

Speaker:

So Squarespace, there's like probably like 10 podcast advertisers that are like

Speaker:

the go-to advertisers for big podcasts.

Speaker:

It's kind of hilarious.

Speaker:

And I have to admit, I was like, I don't think podcast advertising works.

Speaker:

And then I like look around my house and I'm.

Speaker:

Oh, yep.

Speaker:

It does.

Speaker:

It's like where to position your camera, three point lighting, like how to look

into a camera and talk, like all of that kind of stuff that if you don't come

from that background or you've never had that training, that's where most if not

all of your questions are stemming from.

And so, yeah, I think covering some of those just basics.

Like not even so much the specifics of a specific camera, but just like how to set

Speaker:

up your space so that your lighting looks good or your vi like your, just your basic

Speaker:

videography or photography steps as far as what you need to take to get a good shot.

Speaker:

You know, and it is funny because I see a lot of videos.

Speaker:

I hear talks about it, I've given talks about it, about, you know, camera

Speaker:

confidence and maybe I'm just a weirdo.

Speaker:

I've never thought of a camera as needing confidence.

Speaker:

I never put that level of thought.

Speaker:

Standing in an airplane at 18,000 feet and looking at the ground and

Speaker:

deciding to jump out, that's confidence.

Speaker:

But just looking at a piece of metal, like 28 inches away from my face, the

Speaker:

thought never even crossed my mind.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Like, so I think there's even something to talk about, like the things that

Speaker:

we've already told ourselves are problem, that are not necessarily

Speaker:

problems, but we just made it up and therefore we made it bigger.

Speaker:

So we amplify it.

Speaker:

Every time we tell somebody, here's a course on how to get better and confident

Speaker:

on camera, you're amplifying a problem.

Speaker:

That's not a real problem.

Speaker:

So let's just just be a better speaker.

And that covers everything, whether there's a camera there or a person

sitting across the table at lunch and yeah, so I think we could even

get into some of that stuff because that's something that you said when you

mentioned to your friend about being at her, at being better at extemporaneous.

You know, just like pulling this, this nugget out or saying this or saying that.

A lot of that comes from just getting better at talking to people.
