Speaker:Today we're gonna do a very special episode, because Katie ditched me.
Speaker:That's why we're doing a special episode because one of the most common
Speaker:questions you get whenever you produce a show or a podcast or something like
Speaker:that, there'll be people who want to get started and they often have
Speaker:gear and tech oriented questions.
Speaker:So we thought, since it's the season, we thought it would be a fantastic time to
Speaker:come in and talk to you about some of the gear and some of the tech that we use in
Speaker:order to produce a podcast or things that you should be on the lookout if you're
Speaker:already doing a show or thinking about starting up a show for the new year.
Speaker:So we are gonna dive in today, we're gonna talk about some stuff.

Speaker:It's just a fantastic way cuz you can just pick up your phone and almost like
Speaker:a walkie talkie throw your question in.
Speaker:You could do it with video, you could do it with text.
Speaker:You could do it with just audio, and then someone can get back to you and
Speaker:answer you, you know, relatively simply.
Speaker:So it's kind of an amazing piece of tech.
Speaker:We absolutely love it.
Speaker:So I'm gonna start, go ahead and say get Volley.
Speaker:That's gonna be the first thing on my list today.
Speaker:But before we dive in, I just wanna remind you that if you are enjoying

Speaker:So before we talk about gear, I think the most important thing that a lot
Speaker:of creators in general, not just podcasters, creators in general get
Speaker:wrong as they immediately go to the gear stuff, and rather than going
Speaker:to the gear stuff, I think it's important to get the head straight.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:Let's talk about getting the head straight before you go.
Speaker:So let me show you one of my first tips that I think everybody who's getting into
Speaker:podcasting or creating of any nature, something that you should get involved
Speaker:to, and that's gonna be Skillshare.
Speaker:Boom.
Speaker:Skillshare is one of the best things you could ever do for yourself, no matter
Speaker:what portion of the business you're in.
Speaker:They have classes on myriad subjects, everything from graphic design, how to use
Speaker:your audio programs like Adobe Audition or Garage Band, or Logic, all of the above.
Speaker:You can learn some things about sort of creative thinking.
Speaker:There's so much stuff here for you to learn.
Speaker:I think Skillshare is one of the most important things that any Creator
Speaker:should put into their arsenal.
Speaker:I also want to take you onto one of the next things in my arsenal
Speaker:that I absolutely love, and I think this is the shortcut for
Speaker:getting your head game up to speed.
Speaker:And this is an application known as Blinkist.
Speaker:Blinkist is kind of like audible.com, but they serve things to you in blinks.
Speaker:So what does that mean?
Speaker:That means you can get the Cliff version.
Speaker:You guys remember Cliff Notes?
Speaker:You can come in and get that serious Cliff Note version about the books that
Speaker:everyone's talking about, books that you should probably go back into the other
Speaker:day we were talking about EMyth, so let me see if that's available on here.
Speaker:And go back and check out EMyth or EMyth Revisited is actually in here, so you
Speaker:could go in and get like a 15 minute blink, or this one's 26 because it's
Speaker:a, you know, really important book.
Speaker:But it's all about entrepreneurship and this is honestly a book that
Speaker:everybody who's in the Creator space should definitely be reading.
Speaker:If you do any type of digital product sales or coaching, or you, you
Speaker:know, you sell, custom crocheted hydro flash covers, you should
Speaker:probably read EMyth Revisited.
Speaker:It's a fantastic book.
Speaker:This is one of those books that I read once a year.
Speaker:Now, instead of having to go back and pick up the whole book again, I could
Speaker:just run through this quick 26 minute blink, and it will remind me of all
Speaker:of the things that are in the book.
Speaker:Again, this is a book that I read well over 10 times.
Speaker:It was initially part of my curriculum when I was in B School.
Speaker:This is a fantastic book.
Speaker:There's tons of these out there.
Speaker:Blink is quite amazing.
Speaker:Now if you want to check out Blink again, I'll have a link in the description
Speaker:down there at the bottom of the page.
Speaker:But, it's super simple.
Speaker:It's, Doc Rock dot live slash blink.
Speaker:You know, it's a super easy one to get into, but I think that some of these
Speaker:sort of head oriented applications are super important to get your dome
Speaker:right, put you in the right mind space, help you learn some stuff.
Speaker:And I guess the last one I'll give you, which I have literally been
Speaker:using for, I think close to 25 years, way back when it was lynda.com
Speaker:and now it's LinkedIn Learning.
Speaker:LinkedIn Learning is freaking fantastic.
Speaker:As a matter of fact, you'll come in here and you'll see some people that we know
Speaker:and Yep, look right there on the top.
Speaker:Look who's in here teaching up the good, good inside LinkedIn Learning.
Speaker:None other than our very own Stephanie Liu, right?
Speaker:So LinkedIn Learning, you could come in and find all type of stuffs, and
Speaker:so here she has build and engaging online following for creators.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:I mean, there's something that people always ask, Hey,
Speaker:I'm doing my podcast, right?
Speaker:How do I get my podcast game together and how do I grow my audience?
Speaker:Well, if you're on LinkedIn Learning, you could just learn from Stephanie.
Speaker:And you know, Stephanie knows what's up.
Speaker:Like Stephanie is, you know, absolutely amazing.
Speaker:So these are some of my first picks.
Speaker:I think that everyone who's getting into this should look into getting some of
Speaker:that head space together, and that is going over to again, learn things on
Speaker:applications like Skillshare or Blinkist, audible.com, of course is in that list.
Speaker:And then LinkedIn Learning.
Speaker:Now, let's just say you're on the budget and, and you know, Black
Speaker:Friday's not gonna be your friend.
Speaker:You can't do any of this stuff.
Speaker:Pretty much all of these are the same thing as what's
Speaker:known as the public library.
Speaker:Do not sleep on the public library.
Speaker:You can go and dust.
Speaker:Whew.
Speaker:Dust off your library card.
Speaker:I mean, I went to the library last week.
Speaker:I have always used that library because when I was a little kid, that was
Speaker:part of the babysitting game, right?
Speaker:Mom after school, Hey, go to the library and don't hang out
Speaker:with them kids in the street.
Speaker:So I used to just go to the library.
Speaker:So to me, walking into the library brings back a nostalgic nature.
Speaker:It brings, a certain feeling and I just love the smell of the library,
Speaker:like it's something I spend a lot of time in as a child, right?
Speaker:So maybe that's just me.
Speaker:Maybe you don't live near your public library.
Speaker:Most of them have facilities to where you can download books and eBooks and
Speaker:audio books directly to your mobile devices, iPhone, Android, iPad,
Speaker:Galaxy, tablet, Kindle, whatever.
Speaker:From your library, so your state library probably has the other
Speaker:one that everyone often forgets.
Speaker:I don't know about where you went to school, but I can roll into the Hamilton
Speaker:Library at the University of Hawaii as an alumni and I can use the library.
Speaker:That library is massive.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:We are allowed to use our alumni library.
Speaker:So if you graduated with a higher education, you can probably
Speaker:go back to your college and use the library right now.
Speaker:If you don't want to, you know, get clowned by young kids,
Speaker:then just go later at night.
Speaker:Cause they don't go then.
Speaker:No, I'm just joking.
Speaker:It really depends on where you live and what type of school you went to.
Speaker:But yeah, most of you as alumni, you're able to use the library at your college.
Speaker:So there are resources out there that I think are gonna be far more important
Speaker:than a new microphone or whatever that will help you with your podcast.
Speaker:I often get questions of how are you able to bring off, recall facts
Speaker:or talk about a subject matter without any warm up or whatever.
Speaker:Because I read people, like, that's why if you only have 15 minutes a day, even
Speaker:if it's only 10, everybody has at least 10 minutes to fluff their reading game.
Speaker:And it's like, nah, Doc, I don't have that kind of time.
Speaker:Yeah, you do.
Speaker:Either that or you're extremely constipated.
Speaker:Like, so there's definitely somewhere in your time right before bed, right
Speaker:when you wake up, while you're drinking coffee, while you were, you know,
Speaker:discussing ancient Mesopotamian basket weaving in the oval office of your house,
Speaker:aka dropping the kids off the pool.
Speaker:You have a opportunity to at least squeeze in like 10 minutes of reading in a day.
Speaker:I say get it to like 15 to a half an hour.
Speaker:It really will help you and make your life a lot better.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:So now that we've covered that, let's dive in.
Speaker:And I want to tell you that majority of these things that we're gonna
Speaker:be looking at today, you will find them over on my kit page.

Speaker:into maybe getting a new microphone, like looking at some of my two
Speaker:favorite interfaces right now.
Speaker:You guys know I've been absolutely over the moon about the Shure MV 88
Speaker:plus video kit is really, really good.
Speaker:This allows you to do those short form videos, even long form videos, honestly.
Speaker:But this allows you to create rapidly, and that is the goal here, family.
Speaker:I'm trying to teach you how to create rapidly so that you can get
Speaker:out those five and a half pieces of content every day in 2023.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Just be on the lookout.
Speaker:Create 2023 is coming.
Speaker:Five and a half pieces of content on your favorite platform or
Speaker:spread across your platforms.
Speaker:Actually, you need like five pieces on every platform to be honest.
Speaker:But let's make it easy that if you do 2023 divided by 365, it comes out to 5.6
Speaker:and well a point six piece of content is just reposting a quote from somewhere,
Speaker:or a sale on something that counts.
Speaker:So I haven't, you know, a couple of my favorite cameras, so forth, so on, etc.
Speaker:All of this stuff is right here on the list.
Speaker:I will talk about a couple particulars and then we'll dive in
Speaker:and start looking for some of your questions and see what you have.
Speaker:Like we're in a podcasting space right here, right?
Speaker:We're talking about microphones.
Speaker:These are not in any order, but I will give it to you in order
Speaker:of sort of a roundabout figures.
Speaker:The Shure SM58 is an XLR microphone.
Speaker:And it has been the go-to microphone for years.
Speaker:I mean, absolute years.
Speaker:You've probably held one of these or used one in high school, church, some
Speaker:conference you spoke at, whatever's.
Speaker:This is a fantastic mic.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:It's not the prettiest on camera, but it is a fantastic mic for
Speaker:anyone to get started in the game.
Speaker:If you're looking for an xlr, I'm sorry, a USB version of the same look no further
Speaker:than the Samson Q2U, which I didn't put on the list, but I will make myself a mental
Speaker:note to remember to put on this list so that you can find it when you need it.
Speaker:And it's basically the same build quality and everything.
Speaker:But it's going to be in a USB compatible format.
Speaker:Now we're speaking of USB compatible microphones.
Speaker:My all time favorite USB microphone in the game right now, today, as we
Speaker:sit here a couple of weeks before 2023 is the Shure MV7 USB microphone.
Speaker:When you listen to Katie over here on The Flow, this is what Katie is speaking
Speaker:to when we have on our illustrious guests like Alec Johnson or Keely Dunn,
Speaker:yeah, she's speaking into that MV7 usb.
Speaker:The last episode Michelle was on, she's on the same thing
Speaker:when we're doing a Creator pod.
Speaker:This is a fantastic mic.
Speaker:It's one of the go-to mics in the Ecamm fam.
Speaker:It's just a great pickup.
Speaker:And of course there's the ultimate SM58.
Speaker:It's the industry standard.
Speaker:Like when it comes to this podcasting thing, you got this SM 58 and
Speaker:you got the Heil PR 40, which I have on the floor right here.
Speaker:Both of these are just, they're just what it is.
Speaker:Like if you listen to any good podcast, that's what's out there.
Speaker:That's what you're listening to.
Speaker:That one requires a little bit more back pocket.
Speaker:But, um, you know, hey, It works.
Speaker:It's the reason why everybody uses it, right?
Speaker:Plus you get to be like, you'll never find it.
Speaker:It makes you sound like you know Lou Rawls.
Speaker:So there's that.
Speaker:Now you guys know when it comes to connecting it to things, I'm
Speaker:all about the Rodecaster Pro.
Speaker:But I know that can be a lot for someone, but hey, it's Christmas.
Speaker:Sometimes you dive in, you just, you know, look across the room at the person
Speaker:who's supposed to buy your gift and be like, I put up with you all year and
Speaker:for the last two and a half years in the panini, so I deserve this Rodecaster Pro.
Speaker:And then let 'em know what's popping.
Speaker:Great.
Speaker:So another, good one that's relatively new but also not very
Speaker:expensive is the Focusrite Vocaster, it's designed for podcasting.
Speaker:It brings in some of the stuff that you know and love about the
Speaker:Rodecaster Pro, but it just put it into a smaller type package.
Speaker:So I had a chance to play with this at Podcast Movement, but
Speaker:it's a very, very cool interface.
Speaker:It's not too expensive.
Speaker:They do have a version with dual mics, if that's what you need, but
Speaker:it brings some of that Rodecaster Pro flare into a smaller device
Speaker:that's not very expensive at all.
Speaker:So that my friends is a good look into that.
Speaker:All right, let me dive in real quick and get you some of these questions.
Speaker:We got some good ones in here.
Speaker:So Victoria says, what is a good starter monitor compatible
Speaker:with the MacBook Pro, please?
Speaker:Well, first of all, not all, but anything made within the last say four or five
Speaker:years, a hundred percent compatible with the Mac monitors aren't really machine
Speaker:specific, but what I look for is I look for good quality in a monitor, and
Speaker:to me, this is my personal feelings.
Speaker:I don't hear any fights in the comments.
Speaker:Just go to your store and look for an lg.
Speaker:That's the size and resolution that you want.
Speaker:Done in the story game over.
Speaker:You don't even have to think about it until they made the cinema
Speaker:displays like two years ago when they brought those back out.
Speaker:If you went to the Apple store and you were to pick up a monitor at the Apple
Speaker:store, they were gonna feed you an lg.
Speaker:We used, we, I haven't worked at the company for well over
Speaker:10 years, I still say we.
Speaker:We used LG panels in a lot of our, you know, displays.
Speaker:We used LG panels in a lot of the laptops.
Speaker:They're just fantastic.
Speaker:I just happen to like the coloration and the above.
Speaker:The equivalent would be Samsung.
Speaker:Samsung monitors are also fantastic.
Speaker:Samsung just makes ugly cases.
Speaker:The shell on Samsung monitors is often weird and round and has like
Speaker:odd looking feet in the above.
Speaker:So they're both the best two monitors in the game is the Samsung and the lgs, but
Speaker:Samsung is like that person that makes cupcakes that taste really good and put
Speaker:a bunch of crap frosting on the top.
Speaker:But yeah, I would say go to your favorite getting spot.
Speaker:Just go over to your favorite electronic store and then get one of those.
Speaker:If you can, if you are feeling extra happy with yourself,
Speaker:look at the ultra fine range.
Speaker:These are the best in the game.
Speaker:I have an ultra fine on one side, and I have the one level down from
Speaker:the ultra fine on the other side that I use as my bigger monitor.
Speaker:Mainly because it's just to do demos for Ecamm.
Speaker:But I have two lgs that I stare at all day every day.
Speaker:Eyes, never get tired.
Speaker:Colors are beautiful, things like that.
Speaker:But anytime you see the ultra fine range, those are their better monitors.
Speaker:This 27 is a little small for my taste.
Speaker:Mine is an ultra fine 32.
Speaker:It's freaking massive, but it's very good and it's actually cheaper.
Speaker:So this is the 32 inch ultra fine that I.
Speaker:Right now I'm staring at, and again, it's just a fantastic monitor.
Speaker:So that was that.
Speaker:Then the other thing Vicky says is, should I get the Elgato Footsy switch?
Speaker:I love this.
Speaker:The Elgato foot pedal is pretty incredible.
Speaker:I have one I currently don't use it because I just keep
Speaker:kicking it, but they are good.
Speaker:I know that my friend Keely uses it to mute and unmute while she's doing things,
Speaker:but there's a myriad of 'em out there.
Speaker:Because you're a musician, you might look at something like
Speaker:the air turn pedals instead.
Speaker:What the air turn pedals will do for you is they will allow
Speaker:you to change music on the fly.
Speaker:And I think they're sort of better for this.
Speaker:You can program air turn pedals to just be a keyboard shortcut and as a
Speaker:keyboard shortcut, you can set them up to do some of the same things like chain
Speaker:scenes, because to change the scene in Ecamm is command arrow left or right,
Speaker:and then so yeah, you might, you might find that air turn works better because
Speaker:when you're doing gigs, at least it can change pages in the sheet music for you.
Speaker:Although most of you really incredible pianist, I don't know how you keep the
Speaker:fingers moving while you change the page.
Speaker:That's incredible to me.
Speaker:If you're doing something really fantastic, they have a person in to
Speaker:change the page for you, so there's that.
Speaker:All right, let's go on down.
Speaker:Vicky, happy holidays.
Speaker:Thank you for those great questions.
Speaker:I really, really appreciate that.
Speaker:Miles, my man Miles says, okay, Miles wants to know if you should
Speaker:replace, in a nutshell, the Shure SM7B with the Focusrite for
Speaker:something like the Elgato Wave XLR?
Speaker:Negative, absolutely not.
Speaker:No way shape, or how nothing is better than this?
Speaker:Well, there's a lot better, but you don't wanna spend that
Speaker:kind of money for podcasting.
Speaker:This, to me is the best.
Speaker:If you need a Cloudlifter on your SM7B, if you were gonna do anything as an upgrade,
Speaker:it would be to get like the Rodecaster Pro 2, cuz that eliminates the Cloudlifter.
Speaker:And in a way, every time you get rid of a component, it simplifies things.
Speaker:It makes things better.
Speaker:So, If I were gonna do anything to change something in that list, it
Speaker:would be to get rid of the Scarlet and replace it with something like
Speaker:the Rodecaster Pro, especially as a presenter or a podcaster, because you
Speaker:get more of your audio studio right before you have to go and edit it later.
Speaker:That would be it.
Speaker:Or some other type of interface that would allow you to do things
Speaker:like add the compression and the noise gate and things like that,
Speaker:which I know the Focusrite does.
Speaker:But sometimes.
Speaker:The, well, my older Focusrite it didn't do it in the box itself.
Speaker:The DSPs were off board, so you ran it through something else.
Speaker:So yeah, if I was gonna change anything, it'd be go to a Rodecaster Pro or to
Speaker:like an Apollo, something of that nature.
Speaker:And so, the microphone you got, but it wants to streamline the rest of the space.
Speaker:The Rodecaster Pro.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The new Rodecaster Pro two is tiny too, by comparison to the older one.
Speaker:It will help you take out the cloud lifter as part of the gear.
Speaker:And yes, it's a little bit bigger than the solo, but it will
Speaker:bring other things to the table.
Speaker:The Wave XLR is a fantastic mic.
Speaker:As a matter of fact, it's a Lewitt, I think it's a Lewitt two 40, but it relies
Speaker:so heavy on the software, and I enjoy the way the software is working nowadays
Speaker:for these microphones, but it's another piece of software, so, There's that,
Speaker:there's a, it is kind of a catch 22.
Speaker:Fantastic question miles, and welcome back to the show, Todd, Mr.
Speaker:Christmas Clatter.
Speaker:Todd says, what microphone arms do you like?
Speaker:Todd, I'm gonna show you this and it's gonna make you cry.
Speaker:I'm gonna highly suggest you don't go out and copy the me buy one, but this
Speaker:is what I have on my list, and I have to say that because they don't come cheap.
Speaker:In the normal human space, it would probably be the Elgato arms.
Speaker:I like both of them, but my dream team microphone arm, and I'm
Speaker:going to put one underneath my own Christmas tree at some point in time.
Speaker:And you see these on TV shows, you see these.
Speaker:If you've been into your local radio station and it's a brand called
Speaker:Yellow Tech Mika, I think they are the most incredible arms in the business
Speaker:and they're extremely beautiful.
Speaker:Like that's the thing about it, is they're beautiful and they look great on camera.
Speaker:So you see these nice arms here.
Speaker:I mean, they're just incredible.
Speaker:They even have tally lights on them, so that means that when the microphone is
Speaker:active, you would be able to tell that it's active cuz the little light comes on.
Speaker:But these are super strong.
Speaker:They're quiet, they don't make any noise.
Speaker:I guess the only knock about these is many of them have internal
Speaker:cabling and that, you know, can be a pain in the butt when you repair.
Speaker:But these are really, really incredible.
Speaker:I strongly suggest if you could swing it, this is what I would get.
Speaker:If you can't swing it, stick to something normal like the Elgato
Speaker:arms because they are quite strong and they don't make any noise.
Speaker:It's currently what I'm using right now, and so I can move
Speaker:the mic around and up and down.
Speaker:It doesn't really make any noise.
Speaker:Those old ones.
Speaker:When you, okay, let's put it this way.
Speaker:If you can see the spring on the side, skip it cuz it's going to bang around.
Speaker:Make noise whenever you touch the mic.
Speaker:Also, depending on the microphone you have, you will have handling
Speaker:noise like I touch mine.
Speaker:It doesn't make any sound.
Speaker:Some of them just grabbing the handle of the mic arm.
Speaker:You can hear it through your mic.
Speaker:That's a combination of your mic's noise, rejection.
Speaker:SM7B doesn't make noise.
Speaker:And a combination of the mic stand just being noisy and
Speaker:squeaky, and that's no fun at all.
Speaker:Nobody likes that.
Speaker:So if possible, I would say look at the Elgato arms and Rich has a
Speaker:very good comment about the yellow Tika as they're oddly not yellow.
Speaker:This is true.
Speaker:They are not yellow.
Speaker:I'm sure they can be powder coded, but they are really, really incredible.
Speaker:If you watch like, some sports talk radio show or some of the new shows
Speaker:where they're doing a live radio show, you'll see things like that.
Speaker:It's quite incredible.
Speaker:Okay, now let's go.
Speaker:Let's go.
Speaker:Anything else?
Speaker:What places do you recommend to get sound effects for your podcast?
Speaker:Okay, that is a good question from Caleb.
Speaker:Caleb, I had that on my list.
Speaker:So let me go back to my list real quick and tell you the
Speaker:ones that I was thinking of.
Speaker:I personally will always tell you to go to Epidemic Sound.
Speaker:Again, you could reach that Doc Rock dot Live slash Beats.
Speaker:Epidemic Sound to me is one of the best, only because they simplify
Speaker:the licensing process, right?
Speaker:You don't have to go and add a license to everything or certify every video.
Speaker:All you need to do is tell them that one time.
Speaker:What your channels are, so there's a place in Epidemic on your profile to
Speaker:connect your YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, whatever the places you want to go.
Speaker:Facebook, all of the above.
Speaker:And it will go ahead and give you access to those things.
Speaker:If the content providers were ever going to tag a song as not yours, it just knows.
Speaker:And so it self fixes itself.
Speaker:I've never had to go in and manually tell them that I have an Epidemic
Speaker:license and the Epidemic license is mine.
Speaker:And so it works.
Speaker:I have done that for things that I've pulled from Envato, which is good.
Speaker:Envato Elements or Audio Jungle are good other than the irritating Audio Jungle.
Speaker:Audio Jungle.
Speaker:I people, no one is gonna work that hard to steal your sound that you need to.
Speaker:Imprint the sound of your logo in the sample.
Speaker:It's really hard for me to listen to a sample to decide if I want to use it if
Speaker:every five seconds, audio jungle, and you're just talking and I'm trying to
Speaker:hear it's, audio jungle, if this is a good sound and I'm like, audio jungle.
Speaker:Want to use that sound?
Speaker:It's kind of hard to, audio jungle, get an idea.
Speaker:Audio jungle.
Speaker:If I want to use that.
Speaker:Envato, stop that crap.
Speaker:No one's gonna steal your stuff so much.
Speaker:Yeah, let's get it.
Speaker:Let's fix it.
Speaker:I work with creators all day, every day.
Speaker:Envato, sorry, podcast people.
Speaker:I gotta talk to them real quick cuz they get on my dang nerves.
Speaker:I work with creators, they don't know how to steal it.
Speaker:Okay?
Speaker:Trust me, most people don't know how to steal it and your prices are
Speaker:low enough, it's not worth stealing.
Speaker:So just take that stupid imprint out of the file and let me listen.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Anyway, so the other places like Epidemic Sound doesn't do that.
Speaker:Upbeat doesn't do that.
Speaker:Thematic doesn't.
Speaker:The only place I could think of right now that still imprints their sound files with
Speaker:that irritating audio jungle is Envato.
Speaker:So Envato, stop it.
Speaker:No one's stealing your stuff, bro.
Speaker:Okay?
Speaker:No one's stealing your stuff.
Speaker:I'm coming to Australia and have a conversation with you face to
Speaker:face, cuz that's just irritating.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:They would be on my list if it wasn't for that.
Speaker:So I like Storyblocks.
Speaker:It's fantastic.
Speaker:Epidemic Sound is fantastic.
Speaker:Upbeat, which is one of the cheapest ones out there, that's U P P B E A T.
Speaker:Upbeat is also super, super fantastic.
Speaker:All of the above will let you hear music and sound effects without
Speaker:all of the stupid noise and yeah.
Speaker:You know, honestly, Todd, I could probably, nowadays with sound removal
Speaker:technology, I probably could acquire that sound and make the audio jungle part
Speaker:disappear and no one would even notice.
Speaker:So it's just a waste of energy and I wish they would stop that.
Speaker:It's so obnoxious.
Speaker:It's so obnoxious.
Speaker:So yes, Caleb.
Speaker:Let's start with Epidemic Sound and then maybe look into Upbeat or Storyblocks.
Speaker:Story blocks is also super cool because that gives you B-roll video
Speaker:for your video, things that you do.
Speaker:Another one, which a lot of people forget about.
Speaker:If you just need a little bitty piece for the very beginning of
Speaker:your situation, there is Canva.
Speaker:You can actually use some of the stuff that's in Canva.
Speaker:So what you would do is just download the audio as part of a video and then
Speaker:just lay it into your audio editor.
Speaker:That would work as well.
Speaker:The next question, that's such a good question, Caleb.
Speaker:Victoria says, could you or would you recommend Elgato arms
Speaker:for cameras as well as mics.
Speaker:If it'll hold this three pound Shure SM7B, it will hold majority
Speaker:of the cameras on the market.
Speaker:One of the reasons why I like this Elgato arm is not a lot of arms can
Speaker:handle the heft of this homegirl right here, cuz she is a beast, right?
Speaker:This SM7B weighs literally three pounds.
Speaker:I think it's 3.3 to be exact.
Speaker:So the fact that it can handle this, it will hold most cameras.
Speaker:Now when you start getting heavy lenses and things on, that might be a challenge,
Speaker:but you can tighten the joints on here.
Speaker:So once you get it in place, you might be able to crank, tighten
Speaker:the joint down really, really well, and sort of lock that in place.
Speaker:Now I will say, I just saw a comment and I wanna remind you, yes, they do
Speaker:have sounds inside of the stream deck.
Speaker:You can go to the stream deck store and get sounds from there.
Speaker:Really strong opinion coming.
Speaker:Please don't have your feeling hurt.
Speaker:The sound effects that are in the Stream deck store are hot garbage.
Speaker:Okay, I'm done.
Speaker:They're just trash.
Speaker:I don't like them.
Speaker:They just sound campy.
Speaker:Campy.
Speaker:That's a word.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They sound campy to me.
Speaker:Yeah, I just, I've heard 'em before.
Speaker:I think they sound horrible.
Speaker:I prefer things that are being produced by creators that produce.
Speaker:One of the cool things about Epidemic Sound is they're all created by producers.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Anyway, Strong Fathers, I'm gonna answer your question.
Speaker:Where do you get an orange cover for my Shure MV7.
Speaker:It's reporterstore.com.
Speaker:This is on my SM7B.
Speaker:And same cover.
Speaker:So this is my MV7 Pop, pop, pop.
Speaker:It's a 55 millimeter bo.
Speaker:So people listening on the audio, what I did was I went and picked up a MV7 and
Speaker:showed that it's the exact same cover.
Speaker:It makes your MV7 look like a SM7B.
Speaker:At this point, they're almost twins.
Speaker:If no one's paying attention, no one will know.
Speaker:So many people have done that.
Speaker:As a matter of fact, if you watch this show every week and you
Speaker:watch Katie, you see that Katie has a orange cover on her MV7.
Speaker:And that's because I sent it to her
Speaker:So yes, it's just that same exact one.

Speaker:also wanted just to remind you of a couple of tools that I think are
Speaker:important for this process, too.
Speaker:I think, things like Canva should definitely be on your list if you
Speaker:don't already have it, Canva Pro.
Speaker:Super important.
Speaker:I also think another thing to look at is your Adobe Express.
Speaker:Adobe Express is quite amazing now.
Speaker:They're working really, really hard on making it delicious,
Speaker:so it is definitely fantastic.
Speaker:I think you should look into some sort of scheduler for your social media.
Speaker:If you are trying to bring attention to your show and you
Speaker:want to do it, I say a nice way.
Speaker:This is something I've been teaching people a lot.
Speaker:You have to invite people to your show without selling it too hard, right?
Speaker:You wanna just let them know that here's a little teaser and then
Speaker:they'll find it, especially if you're doing any education or teaching
Speaker:or training and stuff like that.
Speaker:You are basically saying, Hey, my stuff is good.
Speaker:Come and check it.
Speaker:But you don't wanna sound like that, right?
Speaker:So you might even get into looking at some courses on how to market a podcast, right?
Speaker:Look at some courses on how to be a better presenter.
Speaker:Look at things like signing up for an improv class, look at things at signing
Speaker:up for a Toastmasters, things like that.
Speaker:Those will do you just as well.
Speaker:A bunch of these tools, right?
Speaker:And I know everybody feels that the gear side is so important that they
Speaker:want to go get a new mic or a new mixer or some new lights or a new camera,
Speaker:but all of that stuff is no good.
Speaker:If you turn it all on and you're like, hi I'm here today to
Speaker:talk to you about my podcast.
Speaker:On my podcast today we are going to be talking about how to get
Speaker:more clients to your business.
Speaker:Like, if that's your podcast, hey, you could have a ikigami camera operated by
Speaker:Scorsese himself and a script written by Aaron Sorkin, and it's not gonna work.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:It's just not gonna work.
Speaker:So maybe.
Speaker:If you find that you just don't have that natural flow yet, whatever, maybe one of
Speaker:the things you should be looking into is how to go get some presentation skills,
Speaker:how to write better things like that.
Speaker:You know, pick up a couple of books or writing.
Speaker:Those are some of the gear parts that I think many, many people miss.
Speaker:Many, many people forget Toastmasters.
Speaker:Many, many people forget improv classes, things like that.
Speaker:And it's fantastic.
Speaker:When we were in Boston, Ken and Glen took us to go see a improv show in downtown
Speaker:Boston and Luis and I had a blast.
Speaker:It was so good.
Speaker:My best friends actually run an improv studio about two walls behind
Speaker:this wall and they're fantastic.
Speaker:I watch their live streams all the time because they don't know that
Speaker:Ecamm NDI is on, so I can watch the show for free from my computer.
Speaker:But it's very, it's very incredible and I think those are some of the things that
Speaker:anybody who's looking into podcasting or becoming a better speaker, possibly
Speaker:getting speaking gigs and things like, Those are some of the tools that you
Speaker:should be looking for besides these mics and mic arms and monitors and,
Speaker:you know, things of that nature, right?
Speaker:It's like if you play piano really, really well and maybe you should
Speaker:talk to a vocal coach so you can get your singing on right, and
Speaker:I'm, I'm sure Vicki can do both.
Speaker:But you know, some people they got the piano part down, but they
Speaker:haven't figured out the singing part.
Speaker:And I had a vocal person tell me once before, Pretty much everybody can sing.
Speaker:And I was like, what?
Speaker:Nah man, you ain't heard my sister.
Speaker:And she said, yeah, everybody can sing.
Speaker:It just has to.
Speaker:You just have to find that right spot for them.
Speaker:So make sure you put some of the tools on your list that are important.
Speaker:Again, Canva, Adobe Express, some sort of scheduler that you use for
Speaker:your social media so you can make sure you're getting these posts out there.
Speaker:Supportive apps like Storyblocks or Envato Elements and things like that.
Speaker:I think all of the above are super, super handy dandy to your brain.
Speaker:Also, don't forget to treat yourself to professional versions
Speaker:of things like Capcut or InShot, you know, so that you can produce
Speaker:more of these short form content.
Speaker:Those things are gonna be big to yourself.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So I think that's it.

Speaker:It travels easily for people who are watching it at home.
Speaker:Let's say it's the size of a relatively large piece of tofu.
Speaker:Let's put it that way cuz I can't think of anything else.
Speaker:You know those little oranges that they, you buy from Costco for the kids?
Speaker:I think they're called Cuties.
Speaker:Yeah, it's about that big.
Speaker:It's about the size of a little teeny orange, cutie and eclipse
Speaker:right on top of your laptop.
Speaker:It has things like amazing 4K picture and the image can
Speaker:follow you all over the place.
Speaker:And that's the Insta 360 link.
Speaker:I will make sure I add it to the kit because David asked, what's
Speaker:really great about it is it's so light that it's easy to rig up.
Speaker:So if you have to take it with you on the road and rig it, it's something that
Speaker:you'll be able to clip to the mac or a music stand cuz it does it way much.
Speaker:And so that to me that kind of gives it a little extra je ne sais quoi is
Speaker:that it doesn't weigh too much and therefore it might go a long, long way.
Speaker:The Insta 360 is exactly
Speaker:on point, Insta 360 link is a guy.
Speaker:Also, my overhead camera right now is an actual Insta 360 regular.
Speaker:This is the 360 1 Rs.
Speaker:So anything like this, GoPros, all of the above work.
Speaker:The advantage of the link is it's an actual webcam and so you can use it
Speaker:for myriad of things, the advantage to this style is when you're not using it
Speaker:in your setup, you can take it with you on the road and get some action shots
Speaker:of you playing piano while skiing.
Speaker:There's that.
